Future of water tourism: Citizens' workshop in Berlin-Köpenick!

Berlin water tourism has developed into an important topic in recent years. In this context, the citizens' workshop “Taking course – For fair coexistence on the water” will take place on August 3, 2025. The event organized by the visitBerlin is organized, takes place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in DOCK 10, Gustav-Holzmann-Straße 10, 10317 Berlin. Interested Berliners from the Treptow-Köpenick district are particularly invited to take part in this free event.

The aim of the citizens' workshop is to develop ways for the sustainable use of Berlin's waters. The concept behind this initiative was presented in November 2024 and follows the guiding principle of “compatible coexistence, balance and sustainability”. The central topics of the workshop are the creation of safe and fair coexistence on the water as well as the harmony of recreation and nature conservation with water tourism activities.

Program and participation

The event will be opened with greetings from Sabine Wendt (visitBerlin) and Michael Biel (State Secretary for Economic Affairs). A panel talk with representatives from politics, tourism, civil society and environmental associations is also planned. An exchange will take place based on concrete everyday scenarios on and near the water. The creative exchange of ideas to develop visions for successful coexistence on Berlin's waters will also be the focus.

There are no costs to pay for participation. Small catering is available and childcare is also available upon request. Those interested can visit the website visitBerlin register.

Background and development prospects

The background to this initiative is the water tourism concept for Berlin presented by Senator Franziska Giffey in November 2024. This concept aims to strategically view the increase in the use of Berlin's waters while balancing the interests of users and environmental protection. The involvement of numerous stakeholders plays an important role here.

400,000 euros are available in the 2024 and 2025 budgets for the implementation of the measures set out in the concept. The plan includes five key projects, including a communication and awareness-raising campaign to promote the sustainable use of water.

The water tourism concept is part of a comprehensive approach to developing the largest water sports and water tourism area in inland Europe, in Berlin and Brandenburg, which has almost 34,800 kilometers of watercourses and 3,200 lakes. In order to combine the needs of citizens and ecological concerns, workshops on the key projects are also planned for the beginning of 2025. They should begin to define a clear distribution of tasks for the implementation of the measures.
