New kindergarten in Lichtenberg: Education for the future!
On June 13, 2025, the new kindergarten at Gudrunstrasse 14 in Berlin opened its doors. This important event was accompanied by high-ranking representatives, including State Secretary Stephan Machulik, the deputy district mayor Camilla Schuler, the commercial director Rainer Oetting and the educational director Sabine Radtke. The daycare center offers a total of 185 places and was built on an undeveloped triangular plot of land at the intersection of Gudrunstrasse, Kriemhildstrasse and Rüdigerstrasse.
The daycare center is financed through the Sustainable Renewal urban development funding program as well as funds from various investment programs. Over the past three years, the project was realized with a total cost of around 10.7 million euros, of which 8.9 million euros were provided by the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing. The new building is seen as an important step in expanding the daycare offering in the Lichtenberg district and covers a total area of 1,370 square meters.
An innovative educational concept
The new daycare center is characterized by an innovative concept of early childhood education and a focus on democracy education. The two-story new U-shaped building houses 870 square meters of flexible group and multifunctional rooms as well as 100 square meters for administration and parental advice. Particularly noteworthy is the garden, which was designed jointly by children and educational staff and has two play and climbing areas as well as an exercise meadow area.
This initiative to improve childcare offerings is part of the nationwide effort to expand early childhood education. The federal government supports the states in expanding and further developing child day care offerings. One billion euros is currently being made available as part of the 5th investment program to create 90,000 additional childcare places. This program is based on measures to deal with the corona pandemic and is partly supported by EU funds from the NextGenerationEU program, such as bmfsfj.de emphasized.
Equal opportunities through child day care
The federal government pursues the goal of creating fair educational and participation opportunities for all children. This forms a basis for the children's later educational and career paths. The care rate for children under three has increased from 17.6% in 2008 to 36.4% in 2023. Nevertheless, an analysis shows that regional differences exist, particularly with declining numbers of children in eastern German federal states compared to the high need for expansion in western German federal states. The bmfsfj.de highlights that an additional 3.5 billion euros will be available by the end of 2027 for the creation of childcare places for children of primary school age.
Overall, the new kindergarten in Lichtenberg represents a further step in improving early childhood education, which is important not only for the region, but also for nationwide efforts to promote equal opportunities and the compatibility of family and work.
