Mobility Day & Family Festival: Wilmersdorf celebrates the future of mobility!

The mobility day and the family festival at Wilmersdorfer Bundesplatz took place on September 12th and 13th, 2025. Under the motto “From a transport hub to a place of the future”, the Bundesplatz was transformed into a lively meeting place for sustainable mobility and neighborly coexistence. The two events offered a varied program that combined both exciting information and entertaining activities. Both branches of the street at Bundesplatz were closed to traffic in order to provide visitors with enough space.

District councilor Oliver Schruoffeneger opened the mobility day on Friday at 3:30 p.m. with a welcoming speech. This day was dedicated to the topic of sustainable mobility in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. From 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., numerous initiatives presented their work at information stands. A virtual bike ride through Berlin in 2037 gave participants a look into the future, while the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office stand offered comprehensive information on various areas of district administration.

Family celebration as a highlight

Saturday, September 13th was all about the family festival, which took place from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. It chose the special first day of school for Berlin elementary school students as an opportunity for a big picnic at a long table in the middle of the street. Participants were invited to register for the festival info@initiative-bundesplatz.de to register, which should promote strong neighborly cooperation. At 5 p.m. the ADFC round trip arrived at Bundesplatz and enriched the festival with another attraction.

The program contained a variety of offers, including a pop-up open-air exhibition on Bundesallee and an audiovisual information path on the 15-year history of the Bundesplatz e.V. initiative, which has been committed to a lively and attractive design of the square since its founding. An anniversary publication was published that documents the successes and challenges of the initiative.

A look into the future of mobility

The events at Bundesplatz are in line with the nationwide mobility transition, which is intended to promote new concepts and alternative means of transport. The focus is not on doing without, but on improving the urban infrastructure. This idea is supported, among others, by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), which supports projects as part of the mFUND innovation initiative for sustainable urban and transport planning. On average, citizens currently use their cars for almost half of their journeys, which means it's time to switch to environmentally friendly means of transport.

Precise data, which is necessary for sustainable mobility planning, is essential for this turnaround. The construction of pedestrian zones, continuous cycle paths and the use of electrically powered minibuses for people with reduced mobility are some of the measures required. Innovative projects like NaMIx develop indices to assess the sustainability of mobility in neighborhoods and help cities improve their mobility scenarios.

Overall, the events at Bundesplatz not only raised awareness of sustainable mobility, but also strengthened the sense of community in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Further information can be found on the Bundesplatz Initiative website and the BMDV.
