Treptow-Köpenick transforms streets: car-free day for families!
On September 22, 2025, Berlin will once again celebrate “International Car-Free Day”. The Treptow-Köpenick district office invites all children, families and residents to use the streets for play and exercise. The aim is to promote quality of life, exercise and neighborly encounters. The campaign takes place as part of a series of events that focus on alternative mobility without private cars.
Particularly noteworthy is the transformation of several streets into play streets. On Friday, September 20, 2025, Krüllsstraße in 12435 Berlin will become a play area from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. On Monday, September 22nd, both Gründerstrasse in 12526 Berlin and Kiekebuschstrasse in 12555 Berlin will be closed to through traffic from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will be available to those nearby for creative and playful activities. Residents are asked to repark their vehicles in a timely manner and to be considerate of children playing to ensure safety.
Diverse activities and free means of transport
As part of the car -free day, public transport in the Berlin tariff area will be free of charge. This enables citizens to explore the city without a car and to take part in the various events. Residents can look forward to numerous activities in the temporary play and neighborhood streets that are closed to vehicles from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This includes activities such as games, chalk and meal together.
In 2022, 37 temporary play and neighborhood streets have already been set up in all twelve districts of Berlin. With 235 play street activities in 54 different streets, a wide range of play options was created. Numerous initiatives from districts such as Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Mitte, Neukölln, Pankow and Tempelhof-Schöneberg are regularly involved and receive support from the Senate Administration, which has published a guide on setting up temporary play streets and budgets 50,000 euros annually for such campaigns.
Growing interest and support for the initiative
Traffic senator Bettina Jarasch thanked the numerous initiatives that support the organization of game and neighborhood streets and emphasized the success of the past few years. The initiative on Anzengruber Straße in Neukölln, which was awarded the “German Neighborhood Prize”, was particularly emphasized. The new game street season, which began in April 2023, encourages Berliners to actively participate in the events and to contribute to the promotion of car -free mobility. An alliance meeting for interested parties took place on April 25, 2023 in Berlin-Schöneberg.
The Treptow-Köpenick district office is looking forward to active participation in the upcoming activities and offers for Car-Free Day. The district office is available for further information and queries. Information about upcoming events and play streets can also be found on the district office website.
