Neukölln is celebrating: Karl-Marx-Straße shines after 15 years of construction!

Karl-Marx-Strasse in Neukölln now has a new face after 15 years of extensive renovation work. As the district office reports, the renovation of the street, which was considered one of the most traffic jam-prone in Berlin, was officially completed on July 13, 2025. The construction set a record for the duration of construction work in Berlin, which was originally scheduled to be completed in 2021. The completed measures not only result in wider sidewalks and a dedicated cycle lane, but also increase the overall quality of life in the area.

To celebrate the completion, the district office is inviting you to a party on Friday, September 26, 2025. From 1:30 p.m., interested visitors can experience a free tour of the town hall tower. At 3:30 p.m. District Mayor Martin Hikel, together with State Secretary Stephan Machulik and Jochen Biedermann, will give the opening speeches. An open-air exhibition will then open at Alfred-Scholz-Platz at 4:30 p.m., followed by a street festival with live music and other attractions.

Extensive work and challenges

The renovation work also included the renewal of the U7 tunnel under the street. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) worked on this parallel to the road renovation, with all lines being re-laid. All construction work took place while the subway, road and sidewalks were in operation, which posed significant challenges in terms of traffic management. This required regular adjustments to traffic routing, which further extended construction times.

The financing of the road reconstruction was secured through funds from the Urban Development Fund - Active Centers amounting to around 11 million euros. From 2027, further construction work on the tunnel renovation and the new construction of the road between Weichselstrasse and Hermannplatz is planned in order to further improve the infrastructure in this important part of the city.

Outlook on future projects

Karl-Marx-Straße is just one of over 100 projects that have been successfully implemented in Berlin. The state-owned company has established itself as a partner of the Senate and the districts for over 25 years, paying particular attention to sustainable and safe infrastructure. The aim is to develop Berlin into a livable, climate- and resource-saving city, which the initiatives in Neukölln impressively demonstrate.

The completion of the construction work on Karl-Marx-Straße shows that the metropolis of Berlin has a comprehensive understanding of sustainable development and urban quality of life, which is characterized by committed cooperation with citizens, politics and administration.
