Celebratory new beginning: Anna Lindh Elementary School opens modern doors!
On September 10, 2025, the new school location of the Anna Lindh Elementary School on Reinickendorfer Straße was officially opened. The celebration was attended by, among others, the district mayor Stefanie Remlinger, the district councilor Benjamin Fritz and the state secretary Dr. Torsten Kühne and Senator Christian Gaebler took part. The new compartment school, which has a capacity of 576 students, meets the highest standards in terms of accessibility and sustainability.
The new school includes a barrier-free main building with general classrooms in compartments, a cafeteria and a multi-purpose room on the ground floor. There are specialist rooms, an administration area and a library on the three upper floors. Innovative technologies such as a PV system on the extensively green roof areas and building technology with privacy screens contribute to the school's modern equipment. The new school building was certified with the quality level “Silver” according to the Federal Sustainable Building Assessment System (BNB).
Background to the opening
Anna Lindh Elementary School's move to the new location comes after a long history of problems at the old location on Guinea Street, which closed in 2022 due to severe mold infestation. This mold problem has been known since 2017 and has led to the temporary accommodation of around 750 students in an office building on Saatwinkler Damm. Thanks to the activities of the Mitte district, a thorough renovation and modernization of the old existing building is being sought, while the demolition of the listed school building on Guineastrasse has been requested to make room for a new building, although this could take several years. Some classes continue to use container buildings from the 1970s.
The Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer will ultimately decide whether to renovate or build a new building. The new building is expected to cost around 60 million euros and take six years to build. The high moving costs, the rent and the shuttle service for the students at the alternative location amount to 6.6 million euros annually. Currently, the transport issues for fifth and sixth grade students as well as the need for additional safety measures such as a traffic light over Saatwinkler Damm have not yet been finally clarified.
Berlin school building offensive
The opening of the new location is part of the Berlin school building offensive, which was launched with a modular type program for primary schools and associated sports halls. The architectural implementation of the compartment concept was initiated in 2018 as part of a restricted implementation competition for architects, which was won by the Bruno Fioretti Marquez GmbH office from Berlin. This concept not only enables efficient planning, but also creates an attractive urban development environment.
District mayor Stefanie Remlinger and district councilor Benjamin Fritz expressed optimism about the opening and the challenges that have had to be overcome over the last few years. The senators emphasized the importance of the new school building for the school community and the ongoing efforts to improve Berlin's school landscape.
