Lichtenberg sets an example: Dementia Week strengthens relatives!

The “Lichtenberg Dementia Week” will take place in Berlin-Lichtenberg from September 19th to 28th, 2025. This event, organized by the “District Control Center Dementia-Friendly Municipality Lichtenberg” (DementzLicht) project, aims to draw attention to the situation of people with dementia and their relatives. The occasion is World Alzheimer's Day, which takes place annually on September 21st and was launched in 1994. In Germany, around 1.8 million people currently live with dementia, which underlines the importance of raising public awareness. Berlin.de reports that a diverse program is planned for people with dementia, relatives and interested citizens.

Numerous events are offered during this week, including readings by the director and author David Sieveking, a herb walk and a traveling exhibition. An interactive experience course is intended to give participants an understanding of the topic of dementia. In addition, public libraries in the district will establish information corners that will provide additional resources.

Special events and support

A highlight of the Lichtenberg Dementia Week is a guitar concert by the duo “Arja”, which will be held on September 25th at 11:00 a.m. especially for people with dementia and their supporters. On September 26th there will be a “Market of Opportunities” at 2:00 p.m., where the district councilor Dr. Catrin Gocksch welcomed the participants. Contact and advice centers on the topic of dementia will also be on site to offer concrete help.

The event is accompanied by a comprehensive information campaign. Poster and postcard campaigns provide information about central contact points in Lichtenberg. Posters and flyers are distributed in public places such as the town hall, citizens' offices, libraries, adult education centers and meeting places. If you would like to find out more about the program, you can find all the information here demenzlicht.de.

Motto and social relevance

The motto of Dementia Week 2025 is “Dementia – being and remaining human”. This motto emphasizes that the identity of people with dementia goes beyond their illness. The idea that those affected “disappear” and no longer notice anything about their environment is a misconception. German Alzheimer Society highlights that people with dementia are still able to experience emotions such as joy, fear and pain and therefore remain part of society.

The governments and organizations involved in the Dementia Week those involved underline the importance of the motto in promoting understanding, compassion and support for those affected and their caring relatives. More knowledge about the disease can help put the disease into the background and offer those affected support in everyday life.
