In Prenzlauer Berg, the playground on Kollwitzplatz underwent extensive renovation, which was completed on July 2nd, 2025. The reopening of the popular venue was celebrated by the district councilor for order and public space in Pankow, Manuela Anders-Granitzki. Challenges in playground renovation
The renovation of the playground on Kollwitzplatz is not the only measure being carried out in Prenzlauer Berg. In October 2020, alpina ag received the order to renovate another playground in a vacant lot between residential buildings. The aim was to maintain the appearance of the playground and bring all areas up to date. A geological report was carried out which revealed that the playground had been built on a rubble foundation and under filled-in cellar vaults. In the past there were already pockets in these cavities, which made renovation difficult.
To ensure safety, the entire basement structure had to be demolished and rubble removed to a depth of three meters. In total, almost 4,000 tons of bulk material were moved, with parts of the excavation being classified as hazardous waste.
