Kollwitzplatz in Prenzlauer Berg: Playground reopened after renovation!

In Prenzlauer Berg, the playground on Kollwitzplatz underwent extensive renovation, which was completed on July 2nd, 2025. The reopening of the popular venue was celebrated by the district councilor for order and public space in Pankow, Manuela Anders-Granitzki. She underlined the enormous importance of the playground for the families in the area and the need to keep such facilities in perfect condition. The renovation work was necessary after safety-related defects in several playground equipment were discovered during the annual general inspection at the end of May 2025. Due to safety concerns, the entire playground had to be closed because partial closure was not possible. During the renovation, all defects and damage caused by vandalism were repaired to provide users with a safe gaming environment.

Small repair work will be carried out by the manufacturer of the playground equipment until the end of July 2025. These comprehensive measures help ensure that the playground remains not only safe but also attractive for families. berlin.de reports that ...

Challenges in playground renovation

The renovation of the playground on Kollwitzplatz is not the only measure being carried out in Prenzlauer Berg. In October 2020, alpina ag received the order to renovate another playground in a vacant lot between residential buildings. The aim was to maintain the appearance of the playground and bring all areas up to date. A geological report was carried out which revealed that the playground had been built on a rubble foundation and under filled-in cellar vaults. In the past there were already pockets in these cavities, which made renovation difficult.

To ensure safety, the entire basement structure had to be demolished and rubble removed to a depth of three meters. In total, almost 4,000 tons of bulk material were moved, with parts of the excavation being classified as hazardous waste. Here, too, a comprehensive occupational safety plan was necessary and employees had to undergo special training. The excavation work had to be carried out under strict safety precautions. alpina ag informs about...

Traffic safety regulations

The safety of playgrounds is regulated by law in Germany. These regulations are significantly influenced by the standards DIN EN 1176/77, which increase the pressure on playground operators. According to Part 7 of DIN EN 1176, regular inspections by competent persons are required in order to comply with the traffic safety obligation. This means operators are responsible for ensuring their playgrounds are safe. Failure to comply with these standards can result in criminal consequences affecting not only the operators, but also responsible persons such as mayors and supervisors.

In order to meet the requirements, regular visual inspections and quarterly functional tests are essential. The main inspections carried out annually document the traffic safety obligation and ensure that all play equipment and playgrounds are assessed with regard to their safety.
