Kiez Days in Berlin: Drop off bulky waste and find treasures for free!

On July 1st and 3rd, 2025, Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) will be organizing the Kieztage in the Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Friedrichsfelde districts together with district offices. The aim of these events is to make it easier for residents to drop off bulky waste near their homes and thus promote cleanliness in the living environment. During the Kiez Days, citizens can hand in broken and old items free of charge from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. without having to make the long journey to the recycling center. District councilor Filiz Keküllüoğlu (Bündnis90/The Greens) supports this important community project. This information has been provided by berlin.de.

There are various drop-off options available to residents on both neighborhood days. This includes waste wood, mattresses, electrical appliances, old furniture and textiles. However, it is important to note that not all materials will be accepted. Tires, varnishes and paints, building rubble, batteries and contaminated wood are excluded.

Exchange and gift market

Another aspect of the Kieztage is the parallel exchange and giveaway market, which is organized by the BSR. Here, participants can hand in well-preserved items and find new “treasures” in return. A variety of items such as board games, toys, tableware and bicycles are welcome at this market. Everything that is not sold or given away finds its way into the re-use cycle, e.g. B. through sales in the BSR used goods department store NochMall. This information comes from bsr.de.

In addition, experts are available to answer citizens' questions about waste separation and waste prevention. The Kieztage are not only an opportunity to dispose of waste, but also an opportunity to raise awareness of zero waste. Berlin strives to become a pioneer in waste reduction, and the Kieztage is a step in this direction. According to a study presented, Berliners generated an average of 220 kg of residual waste per person in 2020. Many resources contained in the waste are not returned to the cycle because they are predominantly used for energy purposes.

Zero waste agency in Berlin

In order to support the transition to a resource-centered circular economy, the waste management concept for 2020-2030 envisages the establishment of a zero waste agency. This agency is intended to strengthen the goals of waste avoidance, reuse and recycling and to network the numerous actors in Berlin who are committed to waste avoidance and zero waste. A preliminary study on the structure and tasks of this agency was carried out in 2022, and the aim is to make Berlin a pioneer in waste prevention. Further information can be found at berlin.de.
