Experience Emma in a new way: book presentation in the Gottfried Benn Library!
The Gottfried Benn Library in Berlin will be the stage for the presentation of the graphic novel “Emma” by Claudia Kühn on Thursday, September 16, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. Not only is the event free, but it also promises musical surprises, including performances on the harpsichord by Gösta Funck. Pre-registration is recommended for participation, which can be done by phone at 90 299 5458 or by email at event-bibliothek@ba-sz.berlin.de.
Emma is an adaptation of Jane Austen's original novel, and the graphic novel was developed in collaboration between Claudia Kühn and illustrator Tara Spruit. Fans of Jane Austen as well as lovers of the Regency era and graphic novel art can look forward to selected, signed copies, which will be available at a book table.
Insights into the world of “Emma”
The story's protagonist, Emma Woodhouse, is "pretty, smart and rich, but completely clueless about love." Her goal is to marry her penniless friend Harriet Smith advantageously, but this leads to complications in the high society of Highbury. Emma's efforts not only put Harriet in love trouble, but also endanger her relationship with Mr. Knightley, who is important to her.
This graphic novel is an interesting mix of classic literature and modern incarnation that captures Jane Austen's unique style. Austen is known for her sharp wit and insights into the social norms of the Regency era, which lasted from 1811 to 1820. In her work she criticizes social limitations, particularly those imposed on women, often through humorous and satirical means.
Regency era and Jane Austen's influence
The Regency era is characterized by a strict social hierarchy and the rule of King George IV. During this time, love, status and marriage were central themes that are also dealt with in Austen's works such as “Pride and Prejudice” and “Sense and Sensibility”. His novels not only reflect the fashion and etiquette of the time, but also illuminate the absurdities and social expectations that women and men had to endure at the time.
The event at the Gottfried Benn Library is an excellent opportunity to learn more about these fascinating topics and the timeless stories of Jane Austen. Fans of the Regent period and romantics are warmly invited to become part of this literary event.
