Contemporary witnesses of the war: Bunker exhibition in Spandau's old town!
On August 7, 2025, the Spandau Citadel and the Gothic House opened the exhibition “Bye bye Bunker – Documentation of Dismantling”. The event started at 6 p.m. and was hosted by Dr. Urte Evert, the museum director of the Spandau Citadel, began with an introductory greeting. Sebastian Schuth, the archive manager, and Carmen Mann, the collection manager, introduced the topic and explained the aim of the exhibition, which documents 30 air raid shelters and their dismantling. The reason for this is the commemorative year “80 Years of the End of the War”, which also underlines the relevance and topicality of the topic. The exhibition offers access to historical bunker photographs from the post-war period and is carried out in cooperation with the berlinHistoryApp to map the bunker locations.
The exhibition can be visited from August 8, 2025 to March 8, 2026 in the Gothic House, Breite Straße 32 in Berlin. Admission and participation in the accompanying program are free, which makes it easier for the general public to access this important topic.

The history of the bunkers in Berlin
Bunkers have a long and complex history in Berlin. For example, the “Gustav” gun turret was completed on the grounds of the Berlin Zoo in April 1941 and could provide protection for up to 16,000 civilians during air raids. A large number of air raid shelters, including anti-aircraft towers, were built and many are still part of the city's history today. In recent decades, the city has pursued various strategies to dismantle or repurpose these bunkers, while some of them, such as Flakturm III in Volkspark Humboldthain, are still visible and can be visited. These remains are a reminder of the devastation of the Second World War and the survival of the civilian population in a time of great upheaval.
