Encounter project for seniors: Berlin and Warsaw are getting closer!
In a remarkable initiative to strengthen German-Polish relations, the project “Let’s get to know each other better!” will start from September 29th to October 2nd, 2025. in Treptow-Köpenick, Berlin. The aim of this project is to activate and integrate people over 60 from Warsaw and Berlin. In order to promote exchange between seniors, twelve participants from Warsaw are expected in Berlin. The Treptow-Köpenick district has established itself as a place for this valuable encounter, which district mayor Oliver Igel emphasizes in a current press release.
The planned activities include participation in the Olympiad 60+, which is organized specifically for older people. In addition, an intensive exchange with the local residents of the district is planned. These measures are intended to continue the cooperation between the cities of Warsaw and Berlin, which have had a formal sister city relationship since 1993.
Importance of town twinning
The event is not only a sign of friendship, but also part of a larger movement that points to around 500 German-Polish city partnerships. The Partner Treptow-Köpenick e.V. association and the German-Polish Society Berlin e.V. are active as project partners, supported by the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation. This support highlights the importance of such projects in building bridges between cultures.
The partnerships between German and Polish cities originated in the 1970s and are motivated by the desire to repair the damage caused by World War II. As the German Poland Institute reports, such collaborations play a crucial role in the European identity of both nations. The exchange of experiences and the promotion of common interests are key factors for the success of these projects.
Promotion through modern platforms
In addition to direct collaboration, the portal partnerpl.de viewed as a valuable resource for organizations and initiatives in the area of German-Polish municipal partnerships. This platform not only offers inspiration, but also contacts for youth meetings and information about the over 800 existing partnerships. There are also best practice examples for promoting German-Polish youth projects, which are dedicated to seven topic areas.
The new initiative in Berlin-Treptow-Köpenick shows how such encounter projects not only break down cultural barriers, but also promote social cohesion in society. Ongoing cooperation at the local level, driven by committed citizens, is essential to master the challenges of the future and to guarantee a sustainable dialogue between nations.
The continuation of such projects and the development of new partnerships are seen as crucial for the future of German-Polish relations. The mobility of seniors and intercultural exchange could contribute to a vibrant, active community that also inspires future generations.
