New start for refugees: Open doors on Potsdamer Straße!
On September 11, 2025, an open day took place in the new LAF accommodation for refugees on Potsdamer Strasse. The event was organized by Prisod Wohnheimbetriebs GmbH and attracted many residents: inside and employees: inside from district specialist offices to get to know the facility. District Mayor Jörn Oltmann praised the organization of the event and emphasized the importance of the new accommodation for a decentralized accommodation of refugees.
Oltmann has clearly spoken out against the large accommodations, such as existing in Tegel or Tempelhof. He wants more qualitative accommodations and fewer major accommodations. At the same time, Oltmann recalled the dark history of the former Franck House, which is associated with the ideology of National Socialism. In this context, he underlined that democracy and the protection of refugees are of central importance and are based on the inalienable dignity of every person, as stipulated in the Basic Law.
Diverse accommodation options
The accommodation of refugees in Berlin is promoted by various organizations and institutions. The Berlin platform helps a comprehensive overview of the accommodations. This lists numerous places, including the GU 3 Brabanter Str. 11 in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and the Alecsa Hotel in Hohenzollerndamm 33 that offer help. It is currently being increasingly being worked on in the provision of accommodations in Berlin, which take different needs into account and thus enable better integration of the refugees.
In addition, Volkssolidarität in Berlin has been intensively committed to refugees and those in need of protection since 2015. It operates numerous community accommodations and initial reception facilities. The goal is a culture of welcome and support on the way to a self-determined life. The services offered include not only the provision of accommodation, but also comprehensive counseling services, language support and self-help to facilitate integration.
Common perspectives for the future
The new accommodation on Potsdamer Straße is part of a comprehensive strategy to offer refugees in the capital a better home. Value is placed on sustainable integration, with ethnic, cultural and religious aspects taken into account in the integration and leisure activities. These measures require close cooperation with volunteers who offer lessons and tutoring as well as sponsorships.
All initiatives aim to promote the active participation of refugees and involve them in decision-making processes. The teams in the accommodation are multicultural and multilingual to meet the different needs of the residents. These measures make an important contribution to improving the living conditions of refugees in Berlin.
