Spandau schools compete in the 51st forest run – 2,600 kids at the start!

On Tuesday, October 8th, 2025, the 51st forest run of the Spandau schools started at 10 a.m. in the Gatower Forest. The event was hosted by Dr. Carola Brückner, the district councilor for education, culture, sport and facility management, opened the event. Around 2,600 students born between 2008 and 2016 took part in this important sporting event, where the focus was on team spirit and the fun of running.

The meeting point for the participants was the parking lot at the “Goldhorn Beefclub” restaurant in Hohengatow, which provided a stand for food. Over 50 teachers, as a competition judge and the route post, ensured the smooth running of the event. The Sportkinder Berlin e.V. also provided support by providing a bicycle relay. The organization was in the hands of the school sports consultants Conny Krüger and Sascha Brauer, supported by the regional school supervision Spandau.

Successful students

This year, students from the Wilhelmstadt Gymnasium and the Wilhelmstadt high school also took part in the run. For the second time in a row, a total of around 2,500 pupils, mainly from the years 2008 to 2014, took part in the 18 races on a 3.5 km route. Three of the ten students were even able to reach a place in the top 10 in their years. The participation was coordinated by the sports teacher Ms. Dumont, who was made aware of the event when a student reported in 2022.

The event offered a valuable opportunity not only to end sporting performance, but also to strengthen the community spirit within the schools. The preparation time was still very short during the first participation in 2022, but now, in the second participation, the intensive preparations proved to be successful.

Support and security

The event was organized in a committed interaction between the Spandau district office and the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family. Thanks to the district forester Kristina Quast, the BVG for special buses and special “forest run stops” as well as the support of the Spandau police, who took care of the traffic management, the run was carried out safely and in an orderly manner. Other sponsors such as Florida Eis and the Boels company contributed to the design of the event.

Overall, the Spandau Forest Run plays an important role in the over 3,000 running events for children that take place in Germany every year. These events, which often do not require membership in a club, encourage enthusiasm for sport from a young age. Children can take part in different races, the distances of which vary depending on their age. Bambini runs for children under 8 are often shorter than 1,000 meters and schoolchildren and young people usually run two to three kilometers.

The Spandau Forest Run is therefore not only a sporting challenge, but also a social event that introduces young people to the joy of running and motivates them to stay active.
