Learning sustainability again: Spandau fourth graders receive carrot books!
In the 2025/26 school year, 1,700 Spandau fourth-grade students will receive a free, unique homework book. The “Möhrchenheft”, named after the character Kiki Karotte, conveys central topics such as sustainability and climate protection in a child-friendly way. This not only imparts knowledge, but also raises awareness of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. As berlin.de reports, the concept of “Think globally, act locally” is being integrated into the students’ everyday lives.
The magazine also contains regional excursion tips and puzzles that deal with the topic of sustainability. Dr. Carola Brückner, district councilor for education, culture, sport and facility management, supports this important project, which is part of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It actively contributes to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the local level, which has been pursued by the global community since 2015 to promote peaceful and sustainable coexistence. Global developments, such as the challenges posed by climate change, require quick action - the project makes a valuable contribution to this.
Education for sustainability
A central component of ESD is conveying an understanding that individual actions have an impact on the environment. The initiative aims to address global problems by addressing environmental, economic and social challenges. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has been coordinating the implementation of UNESCO programs for ESD in Germany since 2015 to ensure the anchoring of ESD in all areas of education, such as [bmftr.bund.de].
In 2020, UNESCO launched the program “Education for Sustainable Development: Learn for our planet. Act for sustainability” (ESD 2030), which is directly linked to the 2030 Agenda. Education for sustainable development remains a global priority that should also be firmly anchored in future education systems. The introduction of ESD in schools is crucial to empower learners to initiate social transformations and actively contribute to achieving the sustainability goals, as well bne-portal.de emphasizes.
Such local initiatives are of great importance in Spandau. They not only promote awareness of sustainability among young people, but also help the region make its contribution to global goals. The “Möhrchenheft” is therefore another example of successful collaboration between educational institutions and local authorities in order to prepare future generations for the challenges of today.
