Sicilian stories: art meets nature in Berlin!

The exhibition “Sicilia”, presented by the artist Loredana Nemes, is currently a highlight in Berlin. It will take place for the first time in Germany from 2024 to 2025 and will focus on the close connection between people and nature as well as the diverse culture of Sicily. In a mix of black and white and color photography, not only landscapes but also portraits of Sicilians and their favorite trees are shown.

Nemes listens to the stories of the islanders and visually expresses their experiences of love, escape and the connection to their homeland. Her works cover various cycles, including “Immergrün”, which was created in 2020 and addresses the decades-long love between life partners through analogue double exposures. Poetic texts complement the photographs and tell of encounters with 14 couples.

Diverse works and techniques

Particularly striking are the cycles “Graubaum und Himmelmeer” (2019–2023) and “White” (2024), which are conceived as an ode to the beauty of trees. “White” is dedicated to snow-covered conifers in the Alps, while the series “Skin and Wood” creates a dialogue between human faces and trees. Loredana Nemes herself was born in Sibiu/Hermannstadt, Romania, in 1972 and fled to the West in 1986 for political reasons.

Her return to the Jasmund National Park on Rügen in 2019 led her to take a photographic look at the beech trees that live there. Nemes studied German literature and mathematics at RWTH Aachen University and devoted himself to photography from 2001 onwards. Today she lives and works in Berlin.

Detailed photography

The “Sicilia” exhibition includes a variety of gelatin silver prints, which are presented in various formats. Each piece has its own edition, giving art lovers the opportunity to expand their collection. The motifs on display include “Pino + Domenico”, “Limone + Mirjam” and “Vittoria & Francesco & Alessandra + Palme” – all with formats of 60 x 45 cm and 100 x 75 cm.

These photographs show the life stories of people who live in close connection with nature and complement the stories that Nemes learned during her research. Through her art, she not only consolidates the identity of the Sicilians, but also opens a dialogue about the relationship between people and the environment.

Cultural significance

The exhibition not only offers visual access to Sicilian culture, but also addresses its literary aspects. Another work by Nemes, “Grey Tree and Sea of Heaven”, is complemented by the 2023 publication and shows her development and return to the roots that she experienced in her childhood.

The art and culture of Sicily are conveyed in numerous languages and invite you to learn more about the beauty of this region and its people. Works by Loredana Nemes can be seen not only in Berlin, but also in numerous national and international exhibitions and collections, such as the Folkwang Museum in Essen and the Spallart Collection in Salzburg.

The “Sicilia” exhibition is therefore not only a look at nature, but also at the hearts and stories of the people who live on this beautiful island.
