School container for Lichtenberg: Rescue in the event of lack of space in sight!
Education policy in Berlin remains the focus of political discussion, especially in Lichtenberg. At the district office meeting on September 9, 2025, a groundbreaking decision was made that serves as a response to the pressing school place deficit in the region. A planned move of unused school containers from Salzmannstrasse to Seehausener Strasse will provide space for 144 students, it is reported berlin.de.
District City Councilor for School and Sport, Sandy Mattes from the SPD, underlined the need, especially in the northern area of the district, to create more school places. The containers are expected to be put into operation in the first half of 2027. The project is financed by funds from the special fund infrastructure of the growing city (Siwa) after a fire letter was sent to the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family.
School place provision in focus
The situation with regard to school pension was already discussed in the first district council of 2025 on January 27th. The Bündnis 90/The Greens faction criticized the unused school places in the containers of Salzmannstrasse and demanded that they use them immediately. The application to point out that the district office has not taken any suitable measures to date has been transferred to several committees. This includes the Committee on Household and Personnel as well as the one for school and sport, as on gruene-fraktion-lichtenberg.de is to be read.
The need for a rapid establishment of the containers is obvious, especially since the property in Salzmannstrasse cannot be used as a school location in the long term. The property owner, the Howoge Housing Construction, is already planning new construction projects on this site. Before that, the Seepark primary school had its premises there.
School places and shortage of teachers
According to reports, around 27,000 school places are currently missing in Berlin, accompanied by a serious lack of around 700 full -time teachers. In this context, educational senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch emphasizes the urgency to create new places and the improvement of the quality of education. In the new school year, which begins with around 404,000 students, initiatives such as the “reading band” are also intended, which should encourage all students to read daily. However, critics are concerned about the budgetary situation and the implementation of these ambitious goals, such as taz.de reported.
The introduction of additional programs to support students and teachers remains a central topic in order to meet the increasing demands on the education system. The district administration and school management are currently working on effective strategies to master the challenges of this school year.
