New elections for field coordination: Citizens shape the future of Tempelhofer Feld!

Field coordination for the Tempelhofer Feld has been a central element of the participation model since 2016, which is based on the “Law for the Preservation of the Tempelhofer Feld” (ThFG) and the Development and Maintenance Plan (EPP). These legal foundations enable transparent citizen participation in the development and maintenance of the extensive area in Berlin, as berlin.de reports. The process is organized together with the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment and Grün Berlin GmbH.

The last elections for field coordination took place in October 2025, specifically on October 11th, 12th and 16th. This year, a total of 16 candidates applied and were able to introduce themselves at an online event on September 25, 2025. All Berliners aged 16 and over who can cast their vote at a public polling station, the red information pavilion, are eligible to vote.

Participation and co-creation

The referendum on May 25, 2014, in which the citizens of Berlin voted in favor of the preservation law, initiated the two-year process to clarify future uses and citizen participation, from which the current participation model emerged. This models a participatory development of the Tempelhofer Feld, so that citizens are involved in decisions in a timely and transparent manner, as [tempelhofer-feld.berlin.de](https://tempelhofer-feld.berlin.de/ Beteiligungsmodell-thf/) explains.

The field coordination itself consists of ten elected members, who are elected every three years, as well as other representatives from the Senate Administration and Grün Berlin GmbH. Its central task includes ensuring transparent procedures and the participation of all relevant population groups. Public meetings are held monthly and there are scheduled events such as the Field Forum, which meets at least once a year.

The next field forum is scheduled for October 16, 2025. In these forums, important public relations topics are discussed and recommendations are developed, which are forwarded to the Senate Administration. The regular discussions, most recently on May 17, 2025, show the citizens' commitment to the future of Tempelhofer Feld.

Commitment and nature conservation

An important concern of field coordination is the promotion of nature conservation and ensuring biodiversity within the framework of community projects. These include, among other things, thematic workshops, which regularly deal with specific topics such as climate protection, history and civic engagement. These meetings are an opportunity to get actively involved and help shape the design of Tempelhofer Feld.

In addition, working groups, such as the Climate Working Group founded in November 2024, were set up. This deals with measures for climate adaptation of the Tempelhofer Feld. Citizens are invited to participate in creative projects and exhibitions, such as the planned pop-up exhibition on nature photography.

The “City Cycling” initiative from May 16 to June 5, 2025 promoted cycling as an environmentally conscious form of mobility. Team #Feldliebe actively participated and collected a total of 2387 km. These and similar actions show the Berlin population's increasing commitment to environmentally friendly projects.

Tempelhofer Feld remains a place for encounters and civic participation, with over 160,000 people using the extensive areas every week. Various events and actions are planned for the coming months to inspire people and further involve them in the dialogue about the future of the field, according to tempelhofer-feld.berlin.de.
