Art Mile in Weitlingkiez: Discover local talent from September 13th!
From September 13th to October 12th, 2025, the Weitlingkiez in Lichtenberg will be transformed into a lively gallery that presents art in public spaces. Around 30 shops and social institutions provide windows and walls from local artists to display a wide range of creative work. The Lichtenberg district becomes a venue for photography, painting, pottery, textile art, installations and poetry. The art mile is organized through voluntary work by art enthusiasts and creative people and receives support from the Lichtenberg Mitte district coordination, as berlin.de reports.
The opening of the art mile will take place on September 13th at 5 p.m. in the community hall of the Weit.Blick family and neighborhood center. As part of the event, a musical and creative program will be offered to properly celebrate the artistic performances. Free, guided tours of the art mile are offered every Saturday at 11 a.m., starting at Münsterlandplatz at the corner of Weitlingstraße. The finissage is scheduled for October 12th from 2 p.m. in the AWO-Margaretentreff and also promises a varied supporting program.
Diverse offers and initiatives
The art mile in Weitlingkiez has firmly established itself in the cultural life of the district since it was first held in 2012. The aim of the event is to publicly show the diversity of artistic activities of the residents and to promote engagement among citizens. This initiative is not commercial and is supported by the district coordination, the AWO-Margaretentreff and art enthusiasts, such as gabriela-thur.de highlights.
The works of art presented can be found in various shops and social institutions in the neighborhood. For example, Georg Welke shows off watercolor paintings in the bookstore, while an interpretation of the painting “wonderbread” by Sister Mary Corita Kent can be seen in the Green Wall Coffee. There are also works by Silke Konschak on ceramics and goldsmith work as well as pictures by Ramona Emmerich in a luggage and bag shop. Such diverse exhibits give the art mile a colorful and inviting flair.
Art in public spaces
Public art has a special meaning because it is visible and accessible to all, which distinguishes it from more traditional art forms. According to Dr. For Christian Steuerwald, engaging with art in public spaces is important for many people, even for those who have little interest in art. However, the crux of the matter often lies in the comprehensibility and formulation of art after 1945, which is becoming increasingly complex and thus represents a challenge for the general public, as in an article by Schader Foundation is executed.
This art mile in Lichtenberg impressively shows how art and civic engagement come together to create a social space that promotes both the creative diversity and the community identity of the neighborhood. It not only invites contemplation, but also stimulates discussion and interaction, a central element of public art.
