Reading for the future: Great reading joy for children on September 10th!
On Tuesday, September 10, 2025, there will be a reading afternoon for children and families from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Pirate Playground at Erich-Kästner-Straße 39, 12619 Berlin. This event is part of the “We in the Yellow Quarter” project and is aimed at children of daycare and primary school age. Participation is free.
The focus of the afternoon is on reading and reading aloud together. The aim is to encourage adults to read aloud regularly, be it at home, in daycare centers or in everyday life. Studies show that reading is crucial for children's linguistic, cognitive and emotional development. A relaxed atmosphere with blankets and small snacks ensures that participants feel comfortable as they immerse themselves in the world of books.
Dialogic reading as a key to language development
In early childhood language development, it is important to offer children sufficient opportunities to promote language, especially those with deficits. The concept of dialogic reading has proven to be particularly effective. This method, developed by Whitehurst et al. (1988), promotes interaction between adults and children through books and differs from traditional reading aloud. While children remain passive in traditional reading, in dialogic reading they are actively involved in the story.
The adult becomes an active listener who stimulates the child's speech production through targeted questions and feedback. Current studies confirm that many children have language deficits when they start school and that these can be consolidated without targeted support ([kindergartenpaedagogik.de](https://www.kindergartenpaedagogik.de/fachartikel/bildungsräume-erbildungsfelder/sprach- Fremdsprach-literacy-kommunikation/diaologens-lesen-neue-wege-der-sprachfoerderung-in-kindergarten-und-familie/)).
A wide range of books and active participation
During the reading afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to discover various multilingual books. Children are invited to bring their own favorite books and present them. You can also look for readers who are willing to read stories in other languages.
The project pursues long-term goals of, on the one hand, promoting children's language development and, on the other hand, strengthening the relationship between adults and children through reading together. The relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to actively participate are particularly appealing to families who play a significant role in early childhood education.
In order to maximize the success of this support, it is recommended that dialogic reading techniques be used regularly. These should take place in a comfortable environment and ideally in small groups in order to meet individual needs ([biss-sprachbildung.de](https://www.biss-sprachbildung.de/btools/diaologens-lesen-dia loge-bilderbuchbetraehrung/)).
If you are interested in the event or have suggestions for readers, comments are always welcome. Such initiatives significantly increase the linguistic participation of all children and promote their development.
