Art, mobility and neighborhood: This is how Hohenschönhausen celebrates!

Neighborhood engagement is very important in Hohenschönhausen. On the occasion of the district's 40th anniversary, the third part of “Kleeblatts” is taking place in Welsekiez, an initiative that brings people together and promotes community. Various events will be offered on this occasion, including neighborhood walks and panel discussions that focus on traffic and mobility in the district. District mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) emphasized the importance of neighborhood work and is pleased about the active participation of citizens in the development of their environment.
The art exhibition “Needle Witch Sigena”, which was created by the artist Dorothee Groth, receives particular attention. This presents photographs, collages and crochet work and will be on display in the Welsekiosk district center until the end of September 2025. The exhibition is carried out in collaboration with the “Audio-Visual Media Initiative for Social Issues Working Group” (Arge IAVM).

Diverse events for everyone

Numerous events are planned as part of the celebrations. On September 10, 2025, a creative hands-on activity, the color workshop, will take place in the Kita TraumWerkstatt. A neighborhood walk, organized by the environmental office, is on the program on September 11, 2025 under the theme “Between Platte and Nature Conservation”. Anyone interested must register in advance: Julia.Bensch@lichtenberg.berlin.de, meeting point is at the Lichtenberg Environmental Office.

European Mobility Week will be celebrated from September 16 to 22, 2025. Particularly noteworthy is the panel discussion “Mobility for all in Hohenschönhausen” on September 16, 2025 in the Humboldt House, which aims to develop new impulses for mobility in the neighborhood. On September 18, 2025, a vernissage entitled “The neighborhood from a child's perspective” will take place in the Kita TraumWerkstatt as well as another neighborhood walk on art in buildings and in public spaces, where participants will be welcomed with coffee and cake at BENN Hohenschönhausen Nord.

Community work in Hohenschönhausen

An important element of development in the neighborhood is mobile community work. The project “On the move in Hohenschönhausen Süd” was started on March 1, 2021. It is financed by the Senate's infrastructure funding program and aims to promote exchange and active participation among citizens. A mobile approach is pursued that enables cross-district collaboration between the Intercultural Garden/NEO and the Campus Hedwig district center. The aim of these projects is to develop needs-oriented offers and to bring different social and cultural milieus together.

The relevance of these topics has been particularly reinforced by the challenges of urbanization, climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic. In this light, an exchange between researchers and designers becomes necessary in order to discuss the interaction between living, working and mobility and to find sustainable solutions for the future of urban development. Initiatives like the “Kleeblatt” and the associated events help to focus on the needs of users and develop new ideas to improve coexistence in the neighborhood.
