Neighborhood tours in Köpenick: live and experience the neighborhood!

The Treptow-Köpenick district office informs in a current press release about the continuation of Rabenhaus e.V.'s mobile district work. The neighborhood tours in the Dammvorstadt offer a platform to bring new residents and long-time residents into exchange. This is done with the aim of promoting neighborly dialogue and bringing local stories to life. The next free tours will take place on October 11th and 25th, 2025 and next year, always at 11 a.m., starting at the Rabenhaus district center at Puchanstraße 9, 12555 Berlin-Köpenick. Participation is free and donations are warmly welcomed. Those interested can register by email or telephone ( mobile-stadtteilarbeit@rabenhaus.de or 030 65 88 01 65).

However, there are concerns about the future financing of mobile district work. The Berlin Senate's current budget draft envisages cuts in the social sector. Ursula Salomon from Rabenhaus e.V. expresses concerns about the potential impact of these cuts on neighborhood work, which has become an important point of contact for many residents. The project started in November 2021 and has quickly become a central element of community work.

Challenges in the neighborhood

How Raven House Further explains, mobile district work is challenged by the growing housing density and dwindling public spaces in Berlin. These circumstances make it even more important to promote community activities. The project not only offers neighborhood tours, but also other community-building activities for all residents. The Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband and the Association for Social-Cultural Work have pointed out these challenges in a position paper and emphasized the importance of mobile district work.

With the Senate taking over funding from 2024 for the 36 mobile work teams in Berlin and the support from the Association for Social-Cultural Work, hope is sown for the continuation of neighborhood work. It remains to be seen how the planned cuts will specifically affect the projects and social cohesion.

Role of district centers

The importance of district centers and neighborhood houses is increasingly being discussed in the current discussion. These facilities function as places of encounter and togetherness. Berlin.de highlights that friendly interactions between neighbors promote openness and a sense of community. In this context, a children's book was developed about the work of the district centers, which is aimed at families. It will be distributed in Berlin's district centers, libraries and family centers to increase awareness of the local community and present the work of the district centers as important meeting places.

Overall, it is clear that mobile district work and the district centers in Berlin play an essential role in the social fabric of the city. However, the challenges they must overcome are significant, particularly at a time of budget cuts and growing social needs.
