Anniversary in Lübars: Celebrating 50 years of senior leisure and digital education!

On September 2, 2025, the 50th anniversary of the Lübars senior leisure center was duly celebrated in the Hermann Ehlers House in Reinickendorf. District mayor Emine Demirbüken-Wegner (CDU) congratulated the guests and emphasized the importance of this facility for the region's older citizens. Lübars is characterized by a special focus on computer and digital education and is considered a pioneer in Berlin, well beyond the 2000s. The initiative to purchase the necessary equipment came from those responsible for the facility themselves, which underlines their commitment.

The programs at the Lübars senior leisure center are diverse and range from digital applications such as Excel, Windows, Word, Publisher to video editing. In addition to the digital educational offerings, there are also numerous leisure activities, such as a table tennis group that took first place in the tournament of all Berlin senior leisure centers last year. English groups, chess rounds, creative workshops and card games are also offered.

Volunteering and community involvement

In her speech, the mayor not only honored the achievements of the founding Lück family and the volunteer management team, but also presented a certificate of thanks. She also announced a surprise gift: a new kitchenette for the seniors' leisure center, which should also help strengthen the community.

There are more senior leisure centers in Reinickendorf than in any other Berlin district, which underlines the relevance of such facilities for local society. The Voluntary Office Reinickendorf is also actively committed to promoting civic engagement. Volunteer agencies in the region offer support and information for all interested citizens who would like to do volunteer work. The second Reinickendorf volunteer exchange will take place in the Fontane House on October 11, 2025, where citizens will have the opportunity to find out about various volunteer options.

Education and digital participation in old age

The importance of education and digital skills for older people is also considered at the state level. The Federal Ministry for Senior Citizens demands that all older citizens should have access to digital media and education. In a society that is becoming increasingly digital, skills such as online banking, booking doctor's appointments or video calls are essential for participating in social life.

As part of the “DigitalPakt Alter” project, 300 local contact points are to be created in order to achieve these goals. In addition, the “AI for Good Aging” program aims to strengthen the skills of older people in the use of digital technologies. Projects like “Digital Angel PLUS” offer mobile consulting teams that teach digital skills on site.

These initiatives encourage older people to actively participate in the digitalization wave, which not only promotes their well-being but also strengthens social participation. Further information about these programs is available on the ministry's website: Bundesseniorenministerium.
