Heat protection for Lichtenberg daycare centers: 10,000 euros for healthy rooms!
On October 24, 2025, the Lichtenberg Health Department, in collaboration with Lichtenberg Child Poverty Prevention, initiated a significant step to improve heat protection in daycare centers (daycare centers). In order to defuse the increasing temperatures and their effects on children's health, 10,000 euros were made available from the heat protection fund. This will enable eight daycare centers to purchase urgently needed materials such as blinds, sun protection films and fans.
The measure aims to better protect rooms in daycare centers against rising summer temperatures and to create a safe and healthy environment for the children. District Councilor for Youth and Family, Camilla Schuler (Die Linke), emphasized the great importance of these measures, while her colleague, District Councilor for Social Affairs Dr. Catrin Gocksch (CDU), who highlighted the commitment to active heat protection as essential for the well-being of children.
The challenges posed by climate change
The health impacts of climate change are an issue of growing concern, particularly for the youngest members of our society. According to the RKI, heat is seen as the most pressing health consequence of climate change. Children are particularly at risk because they are more susceptible to health problems due to their not yet fully developed thermoregulation and their lack of knowledge about the dangers. These risks, including skin cancer from UV radiation, were discussed in the BGW podcast.
Educators have a responsibility to ensure that children have optimal sun protection. Dr. Julia Schoierer explained in a podcast that in the wake of climate change, there is an increasing need for education about heat protection and UV protection. It is therefore important that educators find out about suitable measures - this also includes recommending parents to bring their children to daycare already with lotion applied.
Preventive measures and recommendations
The Berlin accident insurance fund, for example, started the SunPass project to provide information about sun and heat protection in daycare centers. In addition, structural changes in daycare centers should be sought to create shade and promote healthy living spaces. The recommended measures also include mobile fans and sun protection films, which are already being implemented in many daycare centers.
Statistical data collected by the RKI on heat-related deaths shows that there is an increased mortality rate in hot weeks, especially among older people. Heat-related illnesses are often the result of a combination of heat exposure and pre-existing medical conditions, highlighting the importance of preventive measures. The heat protection fund in Lichtenberg is an important first step for this.
In view of the changes caused by climate change and rising temperatures, protecting children in daycare centers is essential. Everyone involved must work together to ensure a healthy and safe environment. This is important not only for the current generation but also for the future.
