Domestic violence in Germany: Alarming figures and urgent need for action!

The situation of domestic violence in Germany has reached alarming proportions. In 2024 there were loud noises rbb24 A total of 171,100 cases were registered, which corresponds to an increase of almost 2% compared to the previous year. However, the number of unreported cases, i.e. the number of unreported cases, remains high because many victims do not come forward out of shame or fear. Around 80% of those affected are women.

The Berlin Initiative Against Violence Against Women (BIG e.V.) points out that domestic violence is not a private problem, but rather represents a clear abuse of power. Particular emphasis is placed on the participation of outsiders; it is important to intervene, even if it may be uncomfortable. The initial signs of domestic violence are often subtle: psychological violence and derogatory comments are often the start of a dangerous cycle.

Current trends and statistics

A recent report from ZDF today also shows a worrying increase in domestic violence in Germany. Around 256,000 victims were registered in 2023, an increase of 6.5% compared to the previous year. Over the last five years, the number of registered victims has increased by almost 20%. Around 70% of the victims are female.

The violence often comes in the form of criticism, jealousy, threats and control. Two thirds of the victims of violence report attacks in (ex-)partnerships, while a third have suffered violence in the family. Children are also affected as victims, even if they do not directly experience violence. In order to offer support to victims and those affected, there is, among other things, the “Violence against Women” helpline on 0 800 00/116 016.

Challenges and offers of help

However, the support systems in Germany are inadequate. In particular, there is a lack of places in women's shelters and counseling services. The lack of uniform criteria for risk assessment makes it difficult to provide assistance. A new anti-violence law is intended to build structures, but the necessary financial resources will only be made available in two years. These delays are alarming, especially given the increasing right-wing shift in society, which promotes a violent image of men.

In order to help those affected, it is crucial that no one is put under pressure. Offers of help should be unconditional and welcoming. Women without their own income or with uncertain residence status are more likely to make use of the assistance system. Men are called upon to hold other men accountable and to actively stand up against violence.

Combating domestic violence is a task for society as a whole. It is crucial that all population groups are addressed and that public awareness of the issue is raised. Effective change can only be achieved through collective action.
