Living together: City walk reveals new neighborhood projects!
On July 9, 2025, a city walk will take place in Berlin with a focus on cooperative neighborhood developments. As berlin.de reports, the event will be led by district councilor Florian Schmidt and offers interested citizens the opportunity to gain insights into urban development oriented towards the common good from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The meeting point is Franz- Künstler-Strasse at the corner of Alte Jakobstrasse. The aim is to create over 1,000 new apartments and social infrastructure in the city.
The city walk is divided into three stations that present various development projects. First, the district development on Franz- Künstler-Strasse, which is being realized by Gewobag, is presented. Around 500 apartments are being built here, including 300 accommodation spaces for refugees and 75 experimental housing spaces. Areas for retail and social infrastructure are also planned.
Stations of the city walk
In the second station at 5:00 p.m. the new development of the parking range in Block 616 will be discussed. This includes 70% living space, of which 30% will be subsidized housing. The project is being carried out by Mundial AG, with commercial space also being planned on the ground floor. Another new development concerns the AOK parking lot, which is being developed by HOWOGE and AOK. At least 100 apartments and social infrastructure are planned here and the start is planned for 5:20 p.m.
The third station follows from 6:10 p.m., the town hall block model project on the Dragonera area. Around 470 apartments will be built here, of which 186 will be funded by the WBM and almost 100 will be built by a cooperative. Supplemented by a daycare center, a youth leisure facility, commercial space as well as green and open spaces, the “StadtWERKSTATT-FK” is intended to offer a space for exchange and participation. The walk ends with a convivial evening where drinks and snacks are offered.
Digital discourses in the neighborhood
The importance of community engagement in neighborhood development will also be discussed in an upcoming digital expert forum on December 5, 2024. The forum, organized by the Institute for Regional and Urban Development Research (ILS), focuses on community-oriented projects in the district and discusses private initiatives and foundations in order to actively participate in the To promote neighborhood development.
Particularly noteworthy are the aspects of coexistence and the strengthening of the social and cultural infrastructure, which are seen as a response to demographic developments. The topics discussed include the emergence of common good and community-oriented projects as well as their challenges and success factors.
Research on urban development oriented towards the common good
Another important aspect of the district development are the results of the research project on public welfare-oriented initiatives, which ran from September 2017 to February 2019 ran. The aim was to examine the significance of such initiatives for sustainable district development. The role of urban development funding in supporting these initiatives plays a central role in the analysis.
Research has shown that educational and community facilities make a crucial contribution to the stabilization of neighborhoods. In the initial phase, projects oriented towards the common good require support and advice in order to be successful.
