Woman burned on playground in Gesundbrunnen – murder squad investigating!

A woman's body was discovered in a playground in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, stoking renewed concerns about the rising number of violent crimes in the city. The discovery was made on Friday morning at around 10 a.m. by a witness in Volkspark Humboldthain. The body showed burns and the public prosecutor's office assumes it was a homicide. The homicide squad was called in because there was evidence of a crime. Rbb24 reports, that a 49-year-old man was arrested near the scene of the crime, while the identity of the dead has not yet been established. An autopsy on the body was scheduled for the same afternoon.

The tragedy in Gesundbrunnen sheds further light on the growing numbers of violent crimes against women in Berlin. In another frightening case, a 27-year-old woman was discovered seriously injured in an elevator of a residential building in Marzahn on Saturday morning. Rescue workers could only determine her death. Here too, the authorities assume a homicide. How T-Online reports, a 31-year-old man was temporarily arrested, but later released because there was no urgent suspicion.

Rising violent crime

These incidents are part of a worrying trend in Berlin, where the number of crimes in 2023 reached a record high of 106,671. This represents a drastic increase compared to previous years, between 76,000 and 84,000 crimes between 2012 and 2021. As early as 2022, there were 95,547 victims, which triggered concern at the time. The Berliner Kurier reports that the numbers of serious violence against women are particularly alarming.

In 2023, 28 cases of fatal violence against women by partners or ex-partners were registered by September, which represents more than doubling compared to the previous year. The statistical survey of violence also shows that rapes have increased by 23% and assault by 9%. According to experts, the number of unreported cases in domestic violence is also significant, which rejects the discussion about suitable protective measures.

Justice Senator Felor Badenberg (CDU) has announced that they prioritize victim protection in judicial work. However, critics like Roland Weber complain about the often ineffective protective measures and call for better cooperation between authorities and aid organizations as well as the creation of safe shelter for endangered women.

The current incidents in Gesundbrunnen and Marzahn illustrate the urgent need to strengthen measures to protect women and to fight violence in their various forms.
