Fairtrade in Berlin: New guide for sustainable discoveries!

On October 6, 2025, the Mitte district celebrates a further step towards sustainable and fair consumption. District Mayor Stefanie Remlinger recently presented the new "Berlin Pocket Guide", which is part of the initiative to highlight the district as a Fairtrade district. This guide was published by the Fair Trade Action Alliance and aims to point out tourists and Berliners to eight places that rely on sustainability and fair trade, including cafes, restaurants and creative shops.

The publication of the guides emphasizes the importance of fair consumption in Berlin. "With this guide, we want to not only support local offers, but also raise awareness of fair products," says Remlinger. Examples of places presented are the Kiezcafé, decolonial city tours and sustainable fashion providers such as Platte.Berlin, which show with creative cooperation how diverse sustainable consumption can be.

Sustainability and fair enjoyment

The initiative aims to promote Berlin's experience away from the tourist path. Visitors can collect stamps with a fair pass at various stations and receive a small surprise from four collected stickers. Actions and campaigns that take place in Berlin not only support fair trade, but also testify to growing sensitivity to the needs of producers in global supply chains.

Another remarkable element of the initiative is the “Play Fair!” Campaign, which draws attention to fair trade as part of the euro. Under the hashtag #Berlinpieltfair, various local initiatives bundle their actions to present the variety of fair textiles and their detection. These actions ensure that more and more Berliners and tourists develop awareness of fair products.

Fair traded food in schools

In everyday life, the increasing spread of fair trade products is also evident in Berlin's schools. Around 165,000 lunches have been provided in the city's primary schools every day, since 2021 only rice, bananas and pineapple. In addition, fair trades are used in over 5,000 primary schools.

The Berlin Bohne city coffee, which has been available since 2006 and consists of 100% Arabica beans from organic cultivation, also symbolizes the city's commitment to fair trade. The state office for development cooperation has contributed to promoting this project and shows that the idea of "thinking globally - acting locally" can also be experienced in the catering trade.

The Fairtrade Towns campaign, organized by Transfair e.V., mobilizes actors from trade, politics and civil society in order to attract cities in Germany and worldwide to fair trade. In order to obtain the title Fairtrade city, strict criteria must be met that ensure that fair products are present and can be used in public.

However, the use of fair trade products in large catering remains a challenge. According to research on the use of fair trade products in Berlin's canteens, the proportion of these products is currently relatively low. Central hurdles such as tight lease and awarding situations as well as inadequate offer for large buyers make the availability of fresh fair products difficult.

However, the new initiative and the Pocket Guide offer hope and ways to overcome the barriers for fair consumption and further increase access to sustainable and fair products in Berlin. For those interested, the Pocket Guide can now be available in 150 Berlin hotels and can also be ordered as a download and in printed form.
