Evacuations in Spandau: 100 kilo bomb from the war discovered!

On Wednesday, September 18, 2025, a 100 kilogram bomb from the Second World War was discovered in Berlin-Spandau. The discovery occurred in a forest in the Spandau district and posed a significant source of danger. The bomb is scheduled to be defused on Friday, September 20, 2025. Up to 12,400 people have to be evacuated, including more than 12,000 residents in the surrounding area. Among those affected is the Vivantes Clinic, where operations at the rescue center must be suspended and the building may not be entered or left during defusing. This is reported by rbb24.

Evacuation measures begin at 7 a.m. on Friday. Emergency accommodation is provided in the Kant-Gymnasium gymnasium and Birken Elementary School. For security reasons, a 500-meter perimeter will be set up around the site. Within this circle, several facilities remain closed, including the Lynar primary school, the Oscar e.V. daycare center and the Awo-Kita Wundertüte.

Impact on transport infrastructure

The police warn of traffic disruptions and restrictions on public transport in the region. The following roads and bodies of water are particularly affected:

  • Neuendorfer Straße zwischen Paula-Hirschfeld-Steig und Askanierring
  • Gewerbegelände an der Neuendorfer Straße 64
  • Schäferstraße
  • Schützenstraße
  • Parkstraße
  • Eiswerderstraße
  • Brauereihof
  • Rosa-Reinglass-Steig
  • Paula-Hirschfeld-Steig
  • An der Wasserstadt
  • Zum alten Strandbad
  • Neue Bergstraße zwischen Neuendorfer Straße und Hedwigstraße
  • Lynarstraße zwischen Neuendorfer Straße und Hedwigstraße
  • Lutherstraße
  • Kurstraße zwischen Lynarstraße und Jagowstraße
  • Sportplatz Neuendorfer Straße
  • Gewässer der Havel zwischen Spandauer See und Höhe Paula-Hirschfeld-Steig

The location where the bomb was found is monitored around the clock by police. This illustrates the seriousness of the situation in Berlin-Spandau and the need for extensive security measures. These are comparable to those that were recently implemented in Cologne to defuse three World War II bombs. 20,000 people were affected there, and large parts of the city center were closed and traffic came to a standstill, reports n-tv.

The situation in Spandau is another example of the challenges that cities in Germany must overcome in clearing bombs from the Second World War. In North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, between 1,500 and 2,000 bombs are found every year, with Cologne considered one of the most heavily bombed cities during the war.

The population in Berlin-Spandau is asked to prepare for the evacuation measures and follow the authorities' instructions to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
