Experience Rap for Democracy: Workshop for young people starting soon!
A unique rap workshop entitled "Your Flow. Your Text. Your Democracy." will take place in Berlin from October 20th to 24th, 2025. instead of. This five-day event is held at the Schottenburg youth leisure facility (JFE Schotte) and is aimed at young people aged 12 and over. The workshop is planned and organized by the Neighborhood House Wannseebahn e.V. in collaboration with Rankwerk Productions and the Steglitz – Zehlendorf district office. The workshops start daily at 1:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m.
The workshop offers participants the opportunity to write their own rap lyrics, record songs and even produce a music video. Under the guidance of experienced trainers from Rankwerk Productions, the young people are introduced to the exciting world of music production and media work. The thematic focus of the workshop is democracy, which is developed together with the participants. A special highlight is the video recording, which takes place on the last two days of the event, followed by editing and post-production.
Encourage creative expression
The workshop aims to create creative opportunities for young people to express themselves and encourage them to make their opinions visible. As with other projects, it is important that young people learn to express their thoughts and experiences through music. This can help them find their own voice and develop a sense of self-efficacy. In a similar project called “Rap makes you strong – our voice counts!” Children in grades 1 to 4 at the Maintal-Bischofsheim forest school learn to write rap songs, and working towards a common goal promotes their sense of community and respect. The focus here is on topics such as diversity and friendship, which will also be discussed in the upcoming workshop.
By working creatively in rap format, young people are not only given a platform for self-expression, but they are also shown the importance of collaboration and support. This approach of using creative forms of expression is also part of the concept of media education workshops in which democratic values and social issues are taught.
Insight into the methodology
In addition to the musical content, group dynamics and individual interests are discussed in other educational formats, such as the creative workshops on democracy education. Participants learn to share experiences and live democratic principles through joint activities. An example of this is the combination of fundamentals such as the Basic Law with creative processes in which group results are negotiated democratically.
The combination of rap, democracy and creative expression not only offers young people entertainment, but also important life skills.
