New slope playground in Preußenpark: construction work begins now!
Today, September 19, 2025, construction work for the new slope playground in Wilmersdorf's Preußenpark officially began. This project is part of a comprehensive redesign of the park area, as berlin.de reports. The hillside playground will utilize the natural terrain profile of the hillside and offer a varied play experience for children.
The planned equipment for the playground includes tunnel slides, a water play area, a large climbing and play equipment in the shape of a tiger and a toddler area. In addition, barrier-free access and rest areas are provided for all generations. The playground is expected to be completed in July 2026.
Construction work and financing
There may be restrictions in some areas of the park during construction work. The hillside playground is financed from the daycare and playground renovation program. The city of Blankenberg recently opened a similar slope playground and renovated the Cologne Gate at the same time. Mayor Mario Dahm handed over the projects on May 4th, the day of urban development funding. The festival at the hillside playground included various children's activities and offered information about the clean renovation work, as stadtblankenberg.de reported.
The construction costs in Blankenberg amounted to around 330,000 euros for the slope playground and 70,000 euros for the planning. Urban development funding from both the federal and state governments supports such projects. In the 2024 federal budget, 790 million euros are available to promote sustainable urban development in Germany. This is done, among other things, through programs such as “Living Centers” and “Social Cohesion”, which each provide hundreds of millions of euros to improve urban structures, as the bmwsb.bund.de explains.
Urban development funding has been established as an important instrument for supporting socially disadvantaged neighborhoods and stabilizing inner cities for over 50 years. As part of these funding measures, it is necessary to also integrate climate protection measures in order to meet the challenges of climate change.
Overall, the opening and renovation of playgrounds in various cities shows how important community and sustainable projects are for the quality of life of residents. While Berlin is redesigning its Preußenpark, Blankenberg is investing in upgrading public spaces and creating leisure activities for children and families.
