Participation culture in urban planning

The importance of citizen participation is made clear not only by local events, but also by the current handbook on the culture of participation in urban planning. This emphasizes that public participation is a cornerstone of municipal practice and is essential for the democratic culture in cities. There are no universal solutions for successful participation - every strategy must be adapted to local circumstances. A common understanding in dealing with one another and the close involvement of citizens are essential for future-proof decisions.

The challenges posed by megatrends and local developments require quick, legally sound decisions that are embedded in a city-wide strategy. It is therefore important that politics, administration and civil society work together to develop a constructive and integrative culture of participation. These approaches are crucial to meeting the wishes and needs of city residents and promoting sustainable urban living.
