Brandenburg's Interior Minister warns: there is a risk of a return of right-wing violence!

Brandenburg's Interior Minister René Wilke urgently warns of a possible resurgence of right-wing extremist violence, reminiscent of the infamous "baseball bat years" in the 1990s. This phase was marked by massive right-wing violence, particularly against foreigners, and resulted in the killing of the Angolan Amadeu Antonio in 1990 and serious riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen and Hoyerswerda. Wilke highlights that there are worrying signs of a recurrence of such violence. His call for social resistance and the “social outlawing” of extremism is supported by other politicians, including the mayor of Spremberg, Christine Herntier, who laments the growing influence of right-wing extremists in her city and calls for more attention to the issue.

The current situation in Brandenburg is alarming. According to Wilke, right-wing extremist-motivated crimes rose from 796 to 870 in the second quarter of 2025, which underlines the urgency of the problem. The Interior Minister emphasizes the need for a civil society that actively positions itself against extremism and radicalization. A particularly worrying factor is the influence of social media, which serves as a platform for the spread of disinformation and manipulative content. In order to counteract this, Wilke announced that he would strengthen media education, media competence and prevention work.

Increasing numbers of right-wing extremist acts

  • Registrierte Gewaltdelikte im Jahr 2024:
  • 5 versuchte Tötungen
  • 988 Körperverletzungen
  • 17 Brandstiftungen
  • 3 Sprengstoffdelikte

A proportional increase in propaganda crimes with 21,311 cases and 5,097 cases of incitement characterize the picture of increasing right-wing extremist activities. Martina Renner from the Left points out that the responsibility for this development also lies with politicians, who do not take the dangers of right-wing extremism sufficiently seriously. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser also expressed concern about the high number of these crimes and emphasized the need to initiate more investigations and prosecutions.

The overarching context of extremism

Extremism is often characterized by dogmatism and a strong sense of mission with the aim of undermining the state constitution. Data from 2023 shows that around 39,400 extremist crimes and 60,000 politically motivated crimes were recorded in Germany. This represents a new high, a trend that has been rising continuously since 2019. The rise in extremist and politically motivated crimes is alarming and requires decisive social resistance and effective political measures.

The challenge of dealing with the increase in right-wing extremist violence remains current and urgent. A strong civil society, coupled with political determination, is essential to decisively counter extremism and violence.
