Blumenviertel: New ball playing area for children ceremoniously opened!

Today, September 15, 2025, the newly designed ball playing area at the primary school in the Blumenviertel was ceremoniously opened. This opening marks a significant step for the school community and was realized at the start of the 2025/26 school year. The area is now available to children and young people for play, sport and exercise, which is particularly important since this place has not been able to be used since 2020 due to its dilapidated condition. The renovation was delayed for a long time due to a lack of funding and human resources, so the playing field ultimately had to be closed for safety reasons.

The support of the district councilor Jörn Pasternack and the Pankow school and sports office was crucial in pushing forward the commissioning of the renovation work at the end of 2024. Now, after the successful completion of the renovation measure, Pasternack is optimistic about the new sports area, which is not only visually appealing but also promotes fair play. This opening is seen as an important signal of cooperation between the authorities and underlines the successes that can be achieved in the area of sports infrastructure.

Relevance of the sports infrastructure in Germany

The renewal of sports areas, as implemented in Pankow, reflects a broader discussion about the need to upgrade sporting facilities in Germany. In the context of increasing urbanization, plastic lawn places are particularly relevant because they offer extensive sports facilities in metropolitan areas. However, it is also critically pointed out to the environmental problem, which is associated with the use of plastic granules in such places. This granulate is carried by weather and use from the playing fields and could contribute to the pollution of oceans.

To counteract this, on September 25, 2023, the European Commission confirmed the REACH restriction on the sale of intentionally added microplastics. This decision has an impact on football clubs in Germany, as a ban will take effect from October 16, 2031, the transition period of which has been extended by two years. Over the past four years, the DFB and European football associations have been working on strategies to make football infrastructure more environmentally friendly.

Sustainability in sport

Promoting an ecologically sustainable sports infrastructure is a central concern of the Federal Environment Ministry. The aim is not only to meet the needs of football and other sports, but also to protect the environment at the same time. Such initiatives are particularly indispensable given the current debates on sustainable development. In addition, efforts to increase sustainability go hand in hand with improving the sports infrastructure, which is of great importance for the health and well-being of the population.

The opening of the ball play area at the primary school in the flower district is a positive example of how local initiatives can be implemented to improve sports conditions in combination with comprehensive ecological considerations.
