Berlin Science Week 2025: On a research course into the future!

The Berlin Science Week 2025 is coming soon and is celebrating its tenth anniversary under the motto “BEYOND NOW”. This important event aims to give visibility to current research and act as a source of new thinking. From November 1st to 7th, the Science Week will present numerous programs that address scientific approaches to addressing current challenges and shaping the future. The festival is organized in a new type of cooperation with the Berlin University Alliance, which includes the Charité, the Free University of Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin.

A highlight of the week is the panel discussion on November 7th, which brings together leading scientists from the network on the “Grand Challenges” of our time. Dr. Hanna-Tina Fischer, representative of the Charité Center for Global Health, will take part in this important discussion. Furthermore, the exhibition "On Water. Water Knowledge in Berlin" will be presented in the Humboldt Forum, which shows research projects by over fifty scientists and works by six artists on the subject of water. Those interested should note that some events require prior registration. The full program of Berlin Science Week can be viewed on the event's website, which is intended to encourage widespread participation in the events.

Interdisciplinary approaches and quantum technologies

The Berlin University Alliance works with experts from various disciplines, including physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians, social scientists, philosophers, engineers and entrepreneurs. The potential of the quantum digital revolution will be explored together. These new technologies leverage the principles of quantum physics and have the potential to solve important problems in science, industry and society. Possible applications range from developing unhackable communication systems to simulating proteins for drug development.

In Berlin, intensive thought is being given to how to ensure that quantum breakthroughs benefit society as a whole, and not just a few privileged actors. Questions about the impact of these technologies on different areas of life are discussed, and how these innovative tools can be transferred from the laboratory to broader society. These topics are in a context that was also echoed at other events in Germany, such as the Science and Innovation Days 2024 in Tübingen, which will take place on November 15, 2024, and deal with the effects of digital forms of communication on the democratic culture of debate.

Active involvement of society

The Science and Innovation Days 2024 are organized by the Tübingen Center for Digital Education and the Tübingen School of Education. The aim of this event is to promote a dialogue between science and society and to address the challenges in the areas of democracy and peacebuilding. An interdisciplinary approach is pursued by involving experts from ethics, educational science, school practice and civil society organizations.

Such discussions are central to addressing socially relevant topics and to transfer scientifically based solutions into educational and social contexts. At present, such dialogues and collaborations are more important than ever in order to develop innovative approaches to tackling global challenges.
