Construction site chaos on Hindenburgdamm: traffic restrictions until 2026!

On October 13, 2025, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office provided information about the current construction work by Berliner Energie undwärme GmbH (BEW). These measures are part of the “Hindenburgdamm network connection” construction project, which began on September 24, 2025.

The work concerns construction sections 4.1 and 6.2, which extend from the Hindenburgdamm/Karwendelstrasse intersection to the Hindenburgdamm/Stockweg intersection area. Traffic disruptions are unavoidable, but one lane will be available in each direction of Hindenburgdamm during the entire construction period. Traffic will be diverted via the eastern lane of the church square.

Construction progress and coordination

Further work is necessary to cover the sections between Karwendelstraße and Hindenburgdamm No. 123, which are expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB) also works in this area to minimize the burden on residents and road users. Close coordination between the BWB and BEW ensures that duplicate work can be avoided.

The progress of the construction work is considerable: six of a total of 13 construction phases between Uferweg and Handelplatz have already been completed, while four further phases are in progress and are well advanced. Further information about this is available on the BEW homepage to inform residents about current developments.

Renovation work by Berliner Wasserbetriebe

Parallel to the BEW's work, Berliner Wasserbetriebe is renovating an approximately 100-year-old sewage pressure pipeline as well as sewer and drinking water systems in the Hindenburgdamm between Wolfensteindamm and Königsberger Straße in Berlin Steglitz-Zehlendorf, OT Lichterfelde. This renewal is taking place in several construction projects in collaboration with Vattenfallwärme Berlin AG, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf civil engineering department and Stromnetz Berlin.

The work is carried out in a multi-shift system, with operating times from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. So far, two sections are already in progress or completed. In the construction project 20/StZe-0028, the old line will be removed and the new line will be reinstalled along the same route. Further work is planned for the next construction phases from 2025 to 2028, which includes the replacement of a total of 240 meters of sewer pressure pipe and sewer work.

The BWB also informs that, for operational reasons, a temporary replacement line for a sewage pressure line will be set up in order to maintain the supply.

Visitors and residents are also made aware of the option to address their concerns electronically. Appointments with the authorities can be booked free of charge using the online service from service.berlin.de. This applies to both non-urgent and urgent concerns, but for which immediate advice is recommended.

The Berlin city administration advises citizens to check available appointments regularly, as new slots may become available every day. Concerns can be processed at any citizen's office, regardless of the district in which you live.

The city's funding and construction projects are part of a comprehensive plan to make Berlin's infrastructure future-proof and take the needs of its residents into account.
