Construction work on Thielallee: cycle lanes for more safety!

Construction work officially began on Thielallee in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district on October 13, 2025. These measures aim to fundamentally renew the area between Habelschwerdter Allee and the intersection of Berliner Straße/Unter den Eichen. Loud berlin.de infraVelo will install a new 2.5 meter wide cycle lane on both sides of the road. This is intended to make Thielallee significantly more attractive and safer for cycling.

Until now, motor vehicle traffic has shared space with cyclists, which has affected road safety. With the new cycle lanes, a 25 centimeter wide solid line will clearly separate cycle traffic from motorized traffic. The new cycle lane is 1.1 kilometers long in total and will be coated in red at the intersection areas. The stop lines for cyclists at traffic lights will also be moved forward to be more visible.

Construction phases and diversion traffic

The construction work will be carried out in two phases, each taking up to ten weeks. The first phase is expected to start in mid-September in the north direction and includes the renovation of the roadway and the establishment of the new loading and delivery zones. In the second phase, which is expected to begin in November, the southern side of the road will be rebuilt and asphalting will be completed by the end of the year. During this time, the road will remain closed to through traffic and diversions will be signposted via Unter den Eichen and Habel Schwertter Allee. This information comes from infravelo.de.

To compensate for the loss of parking space, 91 new parking spaces will be marked on Unter den Eichen street. In addition, there are two delivery and loading zones, each twelve meters long, which are particularly important for the doctors' practices and restaurants on Thielallee. Access to these facilities will remain guaranteed during construction work berlin.de reported.

Long-term transport policy

The initiative to improve cycling traffic in Berlin is in line with the goals of the urban development plan for mobility and transport (StEP MoVe). This was passed by the Berlin Senate on March 2, 2021 and defines measures to reduce motorized individual transport and to strengthen environmentally friendly means of transport such as buses, trains, bicycles and pedestrians. By 2030, the environmental association's share of all routes should increase from 74% to 82% in order to promote urban and climate-friendly mobility. This information is on berlin.de provided.

The Thielallee is therefore an important measure that not only increases safety for cyclists, but also contributes to the overarching goals of urban development and traffic planning in Berlin.
