Future of the Stralauer Kiez: Citizen participation for sustainable development!

On Tuesday, July 22, 2024, the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office invites you to the city workshop as part of the Integrated Development Concept (IEK) “Rudolfband”. The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Zwingli Church, Rudolfstraße 14 in Berlin. Registration is required to take part in this important exchange. The aim of the IEK is to promote sustainable development of the Stralau neighborhood, especially along the areas south and west of Rudolfplatz.

The concept intends to develop the area into a lively district with manufacturing, social uses, culture and clubs. However, this is happening against the background of the withdrawal of district planning sovereignty in Rudolfband West by the Senate Administration. In addition, a planned high-rise building with a hotel, office and high-priced housing could potentially jeopardize the objectives of the project. Another obstacle is the planned A100, whose construction phase threatens the established usage structures in the eastern part. The IEK's long-term vision envisages a model region for integrated urban development that, in addition to economic stability, should also offer a high quality of life.

Relevant topics and workshops

The city workshop is opened by district councilor Florian Schmidt and district councilor Annika Gerold. Workshops cover various topics, including:

  • Bezirkliche Haltung zur A100 und zivilgesellschaftliche Möglichkeiten
  • Senatspläne zu Rudolfband West: Umgang mit dem geplanten Hochhaus
  • Bauleitplanung zur Sicherung und Entwicklung der Gewerbeflächen
  • Klimaanpassung, Freiraumgestaltung und Verkehr

Florian Schmidt underlines the importance of citizen participation for the future of the district and points out that residents, owners and users should be actively involved in the planning process. The IEK is run by the planning office bjp | bläser jansen partner GbR was created on behalf of the district office, with the support of Lokalbau and the RuDi neighborhood house.

Use and challenges in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is known for its mix of living and working. The region has numerous industrial estates and small-scale commercial uses. However, in view of the high building density and the inner-city pressure for exploitation, these areas are in competition with other possible uses. Therefore, many small-scale productive industries often have to give way to higher land returns, which increases the challenge of maintaining existing commercial uses.

The IEK takes into account various aspects of urban development such as development, monument protection, climate adaptation and open space design. This is intended to create a balanced relationship between economic use and quality of life.

A look beyond Berlin's borders shows that other cities such as Copenhagen are also pursuing similar strategies. The Danish capital is aiming for climate neutrality by 2025 through numerous measures and has developed comprehensive concepts for CO2 reduction. Sustainability plays a central role in both urban architecture and transport, which can serve as an inspiration for projects like the IEK in Berlin.

While IEK Rudolfband wants to offer concrete solutions and measures for the development of the region, it remains to be seen how citizens and political actors will work together in the coming months to overcome the challenges of urban development.
