Ten years of remembrance: Commemorative event at the women's prison in Berlin!

On September 25, 2025, the tenth anniversary of the monument “Barnimstrasse 10 – Prison for Women” will be celebrated. On this occasion, a panel discussion will take place, which will be opened by the deputy district mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Regine Sommer-Wetter. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and takes place on the grounds of the Friedrichshain Traffic School, entrance Weinstraße 2, 10249 Berlin. Entry is free. Particular attention will be paid to a special inspection of the audio monument, which will be offered at 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m

The panel discussion brings together well-known participants such as Prof. Aleida Assmann, the artist Christoph Viscorsum and the contemporary witness Kirsten Esser. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Elke Stadelmann-Wenz, who is associated with the Hohenschönhausen Memorial. The discussions focus on topics such as the transfer of historical experiences into contemporary memory formats, the importance of multi-perspective approaches and the condition of monuments, which often remain without adequate care. Registration for the panel discussion can be made by email to veranstaltungen@stiftung-hsh.de

Significance of the monument

The monument on Barnimstrasse commemorates the history of female political prisoners in Berlin and has established itself as a central place of remembrance since its inauguration. The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial also offers educational offerings and audio tours that have been making the historical context accessible for ten years now. These initiatives are part of the commitment to further develop the work of remembrance in German historical culture

A look at the historical significance

The 20th century was an age of extremes for Berlin, marked by the horrors of both world wars and the National Socialist regime. Berlin strives to commemorate the victims of National Socialism and make historical sites visible. These efforts are of great importance to keep alive the memory of the painful chapters of history and to raise awareness for future generations

The Hohenschönhausen Memorial was opened in 2013 and has since offered a permanent exhibition and visitor offers. Their important role in historical and political education is supported by numerous institutions, although entry to most institutions in Berlin is generally free. However, tours and seminars can cost different

The event on September 25, 2025 offers the opportunity not only to reflect on the achievements of the last ten years, but also to actively participate in the discussion about the culture of remembrance and remembrance of women in German history. An enriching experience is expected that emphasizes both memory work and cultural reflection.
