Weapons and knife ban: Berlin pulls the emergency brake in public transport!

Berlin, Deutschland - On June 24, 2025, the Senate of Berlin, under the Senator of the Interior and Sports, Iris Spranger, decided to borrow a weapons and knife in public transport. This measure is part of a broader strategy to increase security in the capital, which is increasingly faced with an increasing number of knife attacks. The decision was made in a Senate meeting in which a real need for action was found.

According to the new legal ordinance, which is based on Section 42 (5) sentence 1, 2 and 3 of the weapons law (WaffG), leading weapons and knives in transport such as sub-railways, S-Bahn, trams and buses as well as in certain public places such as station buildings and platforms is prohibited from now on. The prohibition zones also include well -known places such as the Görlitzer Park, Kottbusser Tor and Leopoldplatz.

Details for the ban

The ban includes all types of knives as well as fright, irritant and signal weapons. However, exceptions are intended for certain groups of people, for example for employed gastronomic companies and emergency services that can prove a legitimate necessity. In the event of an infringement, fines of up to 10,000 euros threaten, and the Berlin police are authorized to carry out suspicion -independent controls to enforce the ban.

according to * Statista *, a total of 8,951 cases of dangerous and serious bodily harm were recorded with knives in 2023. The situation is particularly worrying in station areas: In 2023, the federal police registered 777 knife attacks in these areas, while in the first six months of 2024 there were already 430 such attacks. This increase has led to intensive demands for stricter rules and better protection of the population.
