Volkspark am Weinberg: Playground renovation planned for more accessibility

The popular playground on the Weinbergsweg in the Volkspark of the Mitte district is subjected to a comprehensive renovation. The district councilor Christopher Schriner announced this. After around 20 years of intensive use, urgent repairs and revisions on the play equipment have become necessary. Therefore, the Road and Green Area Office will start the renovation work on September 2, 2024.

The main goal of this measure is to improve the quality of stay of the playground, to carry out important maintenance and repair work and to make the location barrier lesser. The focus is particularly on the creation of access for wheelchair users. For example, a climbing tower with a slide for small children is built, which will also be accessible with a wheelchair. Furthermore, barrier -free coverings around various play equipment are laid to enable wheelchair users to move more easily.

In addition, the paths on the playground are redesigned to further improve accessibility. Edges are removed to eliminate obstacles for wheelchairs. The football field also experiences a modernization in which the rubber lib is renewed and a noise -damaged ball trap fence is installed.

The comprehensive redesign of the playground also includes the renewal of the flooring in the relaxation area for older children and adolescents. Wood structures are sanded and repaired, while new benches and seating are created to offer visitors cozy resting places.

The city invests around 400,000 euros in the renovation and redesign of the playground. The construction work is expected to take around four months, and the playground will unfortunately be completely closed during this time. The reopening of the playground is expected for the end of 2024, so that the children and families will soon be able to enjoy the new and improved facilities again.
