Traffic calming in the Ostkreuz neighborhood: For a liveable Friedrichshain!
On November 28, 2025, Annika Gerold, the district councilor for transport, green spaces, order and the environment, presented an important step to improve the quality of life in the Ostkreuz district. In a press release, she announced the implementation of a traffic calming concept that aims to make the Friedrichshain district safer, more livable and more climate-friendly. The aim of these measures is to enable residents to move without disturbing through traffic, while reducing noise and air pollution.
The planned concept aims to focus on the population's chosen modes of transport, such as walking, cycling and using local public transport. Traffic calming is intended to increase the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in particular by minimizing dangerous situations on side streets.
School route safety and residents' needs
A particular focus is on increasing school route safety around the Modersohn primary school. Complaints about motor vehicles taking shortcuts through side streets and at school arose after the introduction of a bicycle lane on Modersohnstrasse. The district councilor emphasizes that the concept aims to open the side streets to residents, students and various service providers such as craft businesses, medical providers and parcel and care services.
The new traffic calming concept will be presented in June 2024. The measures are also part of the Berlin Mobility Act (§56 (1) MobG BE), which promotes the creation of pedestrian-friendly side streets. In the Ostkreuz-Kiez, the figures show that most residents do not own their own vehicle - only around 158 cars are registered per resident. It is noteworthy that 91.6 percent of trips in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg are made without a car.
