ÖkotTipp: more environmentally friendly grilling without wood from overgrowth and tropics

Grilling in summer is an absolute pleasure for many of us. Whether at home, in the park or in the small garden, whether in a small round or at a big celebration - there are many ways to make grilling as environmentally friendly as possible. A special focus should be on the choice of grill carbon, since a large part of the commercially available grill wood still contains robbery and often even tropical wood in the sacks. To find out how to grill more environmentally friendly, we spoke to Nicola Uhde, expert in forest politics at the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND).

"Unfortunately there is no really environmentally friendly way to grill. But there are a few points that are worth taking a closer look at the grill party as environmentally friendly as possible. With a few small changes you can put less stress on nature and the climate by grilling," explains Uhde.

Elektrogill as an alternative to grill carbon

as Expert for forest politics emphasizes Nicola Uhde: "The most environmentally friendly replacement for grill coal is an electric grill. It becomes even more environmentally friendly if the e-grill is operated with green electricity. In addition, it should be long-lived and repairable. In contrast to the grill carbon, an electrical can simply be switched on and off, which saves energy and the climate: When grilling, with a barbecue Electricity can be set in the optimal temperature, there is no smoke and there is no smoke.

Risk of overexploitation and tropical wood for grill carbon

Unfortunately, natural forests around the world are still being cut down for the charcoal business. Germany imports huge quantities of charcoal from all over the world every year - in 2023 it was around 115,000 tons. The wood for grill coal often comes from the tropics, for example from Paraguay, Nigeria or Indonesia. But Ukraine and Poland are also often mentioned as countries of origin. Russia and Belargo were also represented as countries of origin in front of the embargo. The problem: In many countries such as Ukraine, Romania or Nigeria, overexploitation often occurs, in which natural forests are cut down. Corruption and organized crime promote overexploitation.

what you should pay attention to when buying grill carbon

Similar to German providers,

also only re -pack European providers imported charcoal. The grill coal from Poland mainly consists of wood from Ukraine and Nigeria. Unfortunately, certificates such as FSC and PEFC do not offer sufficient protection against overgrowth from overgrowth if the wood does not come from Germany. The DIN test mark guarantees that the grill coal does not contain tar, oil, coal or plastics.

uhde gives the advice: "If you want to grill with charcoal, you should look closely when you buy. The more precisely the information on the packaging, the better. Finger away from grill coal, in which neither the tree species nor the countries of origin are given. This increases the risk that trees from natural forests for the production of coal have been felled."

recommendations for the purchase of grill coal

Due to the risk of overexploitation and tropical wood in almost all grill coal products, the forest expert of the federal government recommends: "If you want to use grill carbon, you only buy grill carbon from local red beech, preferably with the natural land or FSC seal. In any case, you can avoid grill carbon from the tropics or from the last uraine or Romanian. Should we have a provider for the cultivation of local tree species such as the beech, the wood of which has excellent burning properties.

beyond the grill coal

"If you use to use the ecological grill lighter made of presswood with oil or wax or use your own health when lighting, because when burning, chemical atmosphere, paper or pine cones arise. Use crayential fabrics. Products.

The federal government points out that grilling in nature and parks is only allowed in specially designated areas. This helps to avoid forest fires, especially in times of extreme drought. Please note the information on the current forest fire level on site.
