Torstrasse in Berlin-Mitte will be renovated and converted for an expected five years starting in 2026. This measure affects an approximately 2 km long section between Friedrichstrasse and Prenzlauer Allee. How Moz.de According to reports, two lanes in each direction will be created for car traffic. But there has already been a lot of criticism in advance from residents and environmental associations who point out a lack of space for pedestrians.
The planned work also includes new cycle paths, although there are concerns about safety at the junctions. This could lead to dangerous situations between pedestrians and cyclists. It is planned that 40 trees will be felled, while only 29 trees will be replanted. This decision has already led to protests.
Planned construction phases
The construction work is divided into two sections. The first section stretches from Chausseestraße to Rosenthaler Platz and will take around 2.5 years. The second section, which runs from Rosenthaler Platz to Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, is scheduled to begin at the beginning of 2029 and will also last around 2.5 years. To inform citizens about the plans, an information event is scheduled for November 19, 2025.
Torstrasse represents an important east-west connection and also has historical relevance. In 2023, the average traffic volume was 16,339 motor vehicles per day, which is below the limit of 30,000 vehicles for a four-lane expansion. In the morning and evening hours, when traffic is particularly heavy, four lanes will be used, while the right lane will be open for parking outside of these times. 130 parking spaces will also be retained during off-peak hours.
