Fatal traffic accident in Berlin-Köpenick: Cyclist of truck is overwhelmed

On Monday, July 17th, a traffic accident with a fatal outcome occurred in Berlin-Köpenick. A 74-year-old cyclist was overwhelmed by a truck. The truck was traveling on Salvador-Allende-Straße in the direction of Wendenschloßstraße at 10.40 a.m. and then turned right at the intersection to the Müggelschlösschenweg. The truck driver overlooked a cyclist who moved straight on the bike path towards Wendenschloßstraße. He caught the woman on the side, causing her to get under the vehicle and was overwhelmed. The injuries were so serious that the woman died at the scene of the accident. The truck driver suffered a shock and was treated on an outpatient basis. Both the vehicle of the person who caused the accident and the bicycle were secured for accident reconstruction. At the moment there is no further information from the police.

In their press release on Tuesday morning, the police originally reported that the accident occurred on the opposite side side. However, the spokesman for the General German Bicycle Club Berlin (ADFC), Karl Grünberg, referred to a photo that showed the corrected accident markings and thus confirm the statement by the ADFC that the cyclist had had right of way. Grünberg calls for more controls on the part of the police to comply with the mandatory step speed when turning right. In addition, mandatory turning assistants with an emergency stop for trucks and buses should be introduced, not just for newly approved vehicles. A separate green phase for bicycles and cars can also help to ensure that both road users get in their way.

The ADFC plans a demonstration in response to the tragic accident, in which a "white ghost wheel" is to be brought to the scene of the accident. A vigil is then planned. The demonstration will take place on Wednesday, July 19, from 4 p.m., the vigil from 5:30 p.m.
