Tegel drama: Refugee camp costs 500 million, conditions frightening!

Berlin- A remarkable refugee and migrant camp has established itself in the former Tegel Airport. However, what was intended as a emergency solution has developed into a controversial and problematic major project. Around 5000 people currently live there in lightweight halls that look like tents from above. This number is expected to grow to 8,000, and the costs amount to up to 500 million euros per year. That is up to 250 euros a day per person, which exceeds the price for a stay in a luxury hotel.

According to the Green politician Jian Omar (39), who works as a migration policy speaker, the situation is a "money burning machine". It describes the living conditions as extremely difficult: 12 square meter rooms that are open upwards and have to be shared by 14 people, including men, women and children. The sanitary facilities are dirty, it is too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter, and there is no privacy.

the high costs and disaster protection

In 2020, the last plane took off from Tegel Airport. The place was then converted into a Corona vaccination center. At the beginning of the Ukraine War, refugees and migrants were housed there. Four fifths of the residents are Ukrainians, the rest comes from countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.

The taxpayers bear the entire costs. The camp is operated by the German Red Cross on behalf of the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAS). According to Omar, many of the staff are often only useless. Security is also heavily criticized. According to a are estimated for each security guard 24,000 euros per year, but ultimately paid 155,000 euros.

omar calls this a "back door financing", especially since the state-owned Messe Berlin receives a commission of 15 percent for every employee. Without these income, the Berlin Mass would have major financial problems. Many of the employees are often part of sub-companies that pass on the services.

Problems and allegations of harassment

The hygienic conditions and general security are not the only problems. Several women have complained about sexual harassment both by security forces and other refugees. Omar even reports on a mass brawl between security service and Kurdish refugees. Some security guards with Islamist attitudes insulted Kurdish residents as unbelievers, which led to tensions and disputes. In a subsequent raid, it turned out that a third of the security forces did not have the necessary papers.

Health care in the warehouse is also inadequate. According to reports, medication is rarely administered. A Ukrainian said that his wife only got tablets after four days.

Another problem is the lack of integration of the residents. Around 900 school -age children are housed in a kind of camp school, which makes integration into the surrounding communities considerably more difficult. Many adults wait months for residence permits, which means that they cannot work or participate in German courses.

Some residents, such as the Ukrainian Ilya (25), are dissatisfied with the conditions. He reports that the administration has not allowed him to move to a cheaper hotel. Many feel forced to stay in Tegel because the warehouse management obviously benefits from the high costs. Ilya says: "Give me 100 euros a day and I live like a king in Berlin." The food is inedible and the toilets are dirty.

further half-billion edition provided by 2025

Despite the significant problems, there does not seem to be a short -term solution. 500 million euros have already been provided for the warehouse for 2025. According to the State Office for refugee matters, the emergency shelter should be dismantled as soon as possible, but so far there are no concrete plans for improving the situation.
