Spandau schools start a cool sustainability project for children!

In the 2025/26 school year, 1,700 Spandau students in the 4th grade will receive a free, sustainable homework book called “Möhrchenheft”. The booklet is based on the character Kiki Carrot and teaches children important topics such as sustainability and climate protection in a playful way. The children also learn about the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The project supports the idea of “Think globally, act locally,” which is anchored in the students’ everyday lives. In addition to regional excursion tips, the magazine also contains puzzles that deal with the topic of sustainability. Dr. Carola Brückner, district councilor for education, culture, sport and facility management, expressly supported the project.

The “Möhrchenheft” is a central component of education for sustainable development (ESD) and contributes to the local implementation of the 2030 Agenda. This agenda is being pursued by the United Nations to promote peaceful and sustainable coexistence. The global community sees itself as having a responsibility to act in the face of global challenges such as climate change. Embedding ESD in education systems remains a global priority, with UNESCO playing a key role in its implementation. The homework book was originally imported from Thuringia to Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in 2017 and has been organized throughout Berlin since 2018 in cooperation with various Berlin districts.

National and international education policy

Education for sustainable development aims to reflect on individual actions and understand their consequences for the environment and society. This educational initiative is coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which has been dedicated to implementing the UNESCO programs for ESD in Germany since 2015. The National Platform for ESD is intended to anchor the concept structurally in all areas of education. The chairman of the platform, which brings together decision-makers from politics, business and civil society, is Stephan Ertner, State Secretary at the BMBF.

The international program "Education for Sustainable Development: Learn for our planet. Act for sustainability", launched by UNESCO in 2020, emphasizes the important role of education for sustainable development. The program is closely linked to the 2030 Agenda and the associated 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The aim of these initiatives is to enable learners to actively shape social transformations. The international conference for the launch event took place in Berlin in 2021 and highlighted the relevance of the topic for the global community.

Connection to the 2030 Agenda

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by the United Nations in 2015, form the foundation of educational goals in the context of sustainable development. Particularly noteworthy is Goal 4, which focuses on high-quality education and includes ESD as a sub-goal. Education for sustainable development is crucial to bringing about the necessary societal transformation and ensuring that individuals understand the consequences of their actions. The children's involvement in the “Möhrchenheft” is a first step in laying the foundations for a sustainable future.

Overall, this project in Spandau shows that education for sustainable development is not just an abstract concept, but rather becomes tangible through creative approaches and local cooperation. In this way, children learn to implement sustainable practices in their daily living environment and to take an active role in it.
