Spandau is giving away free city climate trees – apply now!
The Spandau district office is continuing its initiative to promote urban greening this year. Property owners can now apply to receive free urban climate trees. This action is part of a comprehensive nature conservation concept that is financed from the district's resources. How berlin.de reported, this is the fourth year in which the city climate trees have been given away.
The application deadline runs until October 5th, 2025, with delivery of the trees expected to take place in late autumn from November 2025. Anyone interested can apply to the Spandau Environment and Nature Conservation Office while stocks last.
Conditions of participation and tree species
The prerequisite for the application is that the property owner or authorized user has space for a tree. The necessary space is at least 15 to 20 square meters. You also have to specify the future location and the desired tree. The tree species available to choose from include:
- Feld-Ahorn (Acer campestre)
- Hainbuche (Carpinus betulus)
- Wild-Apfel (Malus sylvestris)
- Elsbeere (Sorbus torminalis)
- Esskastanie (Castanea sativa)
The trees are tall trunks with a trunk circumference of 12 to 14 cm and a height of 3.50 to 4 meters, and their weight is between 25 and 30 kilograms. One package includes delivery, a tree stake, coconut rope and planting instructions.
Benefits and Responsibilities
District councilor Thorsten Schatz emphasizes the numerous advantages of trees. They provide shade, purify the air, produce edible fruits and flowers that attract insects, and contribute to visual relaxation and carbon sequestration. These aspects are crucial for improving the urban climate spandau-bewegt.de.
The responsibility for planting, caring for and reporting the growth of the trees lies with the applicants themselves. Minimum distances to neighboring properties must also be observed: at least 3 meters of space must be maintained for serviceberries and chestnuts, and at least 1.50 meters for field maples, hornbeams and wild apples. Excluded from this campaign are applications that are tied to obligations for replacement planting in accordance with the Berlin Tree Protection Ordinance.
