Safe cycling: New cycle streets in Steglitz-Zehlendorf!
A significant project to improve the cycling infrastructure is currently being implemented in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. How reported, over 1.6 kilometers of new cycle paths will be created in the cycle priority network. The measures are scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2023 and aim to significantly improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and residents.
The planned changes include, among other things, reducing vehicle traffic, setting up new bicycle lanes and creating safety lanes next to parking spaces. These are intended to prevent dooring accidents. In addition, large red markings are planned at intersections and junctions, which improve visibility for all road users.
New bicycle infrastructure project
As part of this project, two new bicycle streets in Königsweg and Tietzenweg will be marked in collaboration with the Senate Transport Administration, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district and infraVelo. The Königsweg represents an important cycle connection between Potsdam-Babelsberg and Zehlendorf, and the redesign covers over 1,300 meters.
The Königsweg Südwest section between Katteweg and Am Waldhaus street will be designed so that parking spaces are retained while a safety lane is marked. The Königsweg Ost section, which runs between Clauertstrasse and Idsteiner Strasse, will be converted into a bicycle route, although the parking spaces on the northern side will remain. In Tietzenweg, the northern section between Gardeschützenweg and Unter den Eichen will also be converted into a bicycle lane in order to reduce traffic and increase safety for cyclists and children in daycare centers.
More safety and attractive routes for cyclists
The existing parking spaces on the high side will be retained and a 0.75 meter wide safety dividing strip will be marked. The surrounding district cycle routes, such as the “Nikolassee Route” and the “Steglitz Route”, will also become significantly more attractive thanks to the new cycle streets. These cycle streets have priority for cyclists; Motor vehicles are only permitted as residents and must adhere to a speed limit of 30 km/h. Garbage trucks, ambulances and fire departments are allowed to use the bike lanes at any time to ensure unrestricted access.
In addition, regular pictograms and markings increase safety on the new bicycle roads. Sources of information such as Komoot provide further details on the specific routes and facilities.
The trend towards cycling
The initiative in Berlin fits into a larger trend that is loud Mobility Forum is characterized by an increasing switch to bicycles as an environmentally friendly alternative to cars. The expansion of cycling is increasing significantly, not least due to the increasing popularity of e-bikes and (e-)cargo bikes.
A growing public awareness of sustainable mobility is driving the development of new cycling concepts. Efforts to understand and promote the requirements and potential of cycling receive an additional boost through regularly updated data and reports such as the publication “Cycling in Germany – Figures, Data, Facts”. This information, together with federal and state funding, will help further establish cycling as an important transport alternative.
