Serious traffic accident in Plänterwald: motorcyclist injured!

On the afternoon of November 26, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in the Plänterwald district, involving a 46-year-old van driver and a 65-year-old motorcyclist. At around 3:10 p.m., the van driver turned right from Köpenicker Landstrasse onto Bulgarische Strasse and changed lanes in the process. He collided with the motorcyclist riding next to him, who subsequently fell and sustained injuries to his torso. He was immediately taken to a hospital for inpatient treatment, while the investigation was taken over by a traffic crime commissioner from Police Directorate 3 (East), as berlin.de reports.

Just a few hours earlier, around 11:30 a.m. on the same day, another serious accident occurred in Plänterwald. A 92-year-old man who was pushing his bicycle was critically injured. He entered the street Am Treptower Park through a gap in a hedge and collided with a 63-year-old motorcyclist who was traveling towards Schöneweide. The latter initiated emergency braking, but was unable to prevent the collision. Both people involved fell and while the motorcyclist was able to leave the clinic after outpatient treatment, the 92-year-old had to be hospitalized and treated in intensive care due to head injuries. The investigation into this incident is also ongoing, as bild.de reports.

Road safety for seniors

The incidents shed light on the road safety of older road users. As you age, your ability to react and your eyesight can decrease, which can affect your safety on the road. The ADAC points out that older road users are often more at risk than dangerous. Statistics from 2023 show that people aged 65 and over caused 18.5% of personal injury accidents, despite a population share of 22%. Over 50% of pedestrians and cyclists who have fatal accidents belong to this age group, and among Pedelec users it is almost 70% of those who have fatal accidents, as explained on adac.de.

The ADAC recommends that seniors should regularly self-critically check their ability to drive. Healthy mobility is crucial for the quality of life of older people. Alternative means of transport should therefore be considered at an early stage. The ADAC offers various programs that aim to teach older road users safety in road traffic and to discuss the current traffic situation with them.
